Lack of confidence..?
Hello doctor: During my puberty, I developed acne and blackheads on my face, and I often squeezed them with my hands.
As a result, I have many shallow scars and small red lines on my face (which look like a cluster of broken capillaries).
Additionally, I have small bumps on my face, back, and chest (which become worse in the summer).
Is there still hope for me? I am very afraid of others seeing my face when I go out.
Thank you very much.

Acne scars can be classified into "true scars" (atrophic or hypertrophic scars) and "false scars" (erythema or hyperpigmentation).
True scars, particularly atrophic scars, can be treated with dermabrasion; currently, most procedures use laser resurfacing, which causes less damage than traditional microdermabrasion and has a quicker recovery time.
Wound healing typically takes about one week, while redness may take one to two months to fade.
Some individuals may experience hyperpigmentation (dark spots), which can take approximately three to six months to resolve, depending on post-operative care.
Hypertrophic scars, which are related to individual skin types, can lead to raised keloid scars.
These can be treated with topical or injectable steroids or cryotherapy.
As for false scars, they usually manifest as red or dark pigmentation left by acne, which typically fades gradually over time (about three to six months).
The use of whitening products and sun protection can help accelerate this fading process.
Given the multifactorial nature of acne, dermatologists often adopt a comprehensive approach; it is essential to collaborate with your dermatologist for optimal results.

Dear Patient,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns about acne scars and the impact they have on your confidence. It’s completely understandable to feel self-conscious about your skin, especially when it has been affected by acne during your teenage years. Let’s explore the options available for treating acne scars and improving your skin’s appearance.
Acne scars can be a result of various factors, including the severity of the acne, the type of acne (such as cystic acne), and the way the acne is treated. Picking at or squeezing pimples can lead to more significant scarring, as you’ve experienced. The good news is that there are several effective treatments available that can help reduce the appearance of scars and improve your skin texture.
1. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter products containing ingredients like retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) can help promote skin cell turnover and improve the texture of your skin. Retinoids, in particular, are known for their ability to reduce the appearance of scars and improve overall skin tone.
2. Chemical Peels: These treatments involve applying a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the top layer to peel off. This can help reduce the appearance of scars and improve skin texture. Chemical peels can be performed by a dermatologist and can vary in strength.
3. Microneedling: This procedure involves using fine needles to create tiny punctures in the skin, which stimulates collagen production. This can help improve the appearance of scars over time. Microneedling is often combined with topical treatments to enhance results.
4. Laser Therapy: Laser treatments can target specific areas of the skin to reduce the appearance of scars. There are different types of lasers, including ablative and non-ablative lasers, which can help resurface the skin and promote healing.
5. Dermal Fillers: For deeper scars, dermal fillers can be injected to raise the depressed areas of the skin, making them less noticeable. This is a temporary solution, as fillers typically need to be reapplied every few months.
6. Lifestyle Changes: Maintaining a good skincare routine, including regular cleansing and moisturizing, can help improve your skin’s overall health. Additionally, using sunscreen daily is crucial to protect your skin from UV damage, which can worsen the appearance of scars.
7. Consultation with a Dermatologist: It’s essential to consult with a dermatologist who can assess your skin and recommend a personalized treatment plan. They can provide guidance on the most suitable options based on your skin type and the severity of your scars.
8. Psychological Support: It’s also important to address the emotional impact of acne scars. Consider speaking with a mental health professional or joining a support group where you can share your experiences and feelings. Building self-confidence takes time, and having a support system can be beneficial.
In conclusion, while acne scars can be distressing, there are numerous treatment options available that can help improve your skin’s appearance and boost your confidence. It’s essential to be patient, as results may take time, and to work closely with a dermatologist to find the best approach for your specific situation. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and with the right treatment and support, you can regain your confidence in your skin.
Best wishes on your path to clearer skin!
