Cracked skin on the fingers?
Although my fingers do not often come into contact with water, they easily crack.
I thought it was due to dryness, but even after applying hand cream and petroleum jelly, there hasn't been much improvement.
Could there be other reasons?

Dr. Huang Ruiyun reply Dermatology
Hand cream and petroleum jelly can be applied five to ten times a day, especially after each hand wash.
You can even apply it and wear knitted gloves while sleeping.
If the problem persists, please consult a dermatologist.

More Info
Cracking fingers can be a common issue that many people experience, and it can be attributed to several factors. While you mentioned that you do not frequently come into contact with water, and you have tried using hand creams and petroleum jelly without much success, there are other underlying causes that could be contributing to your problem.
Possible Causes of Cracking Fingers
1. Dry Skin: Even if you do not frequently wash your hands, environmental factors such as low humidity, cold weather, or exposure to harsh chemicals can lead to dry skin. This dryness can cause the skin on your fingers to crack, especially if you are not moisturizing adequately.
2. Eczema or Dermatitis: Conditions like eczema or contact dermatitis can lead to dry, itchy, and cracked skin. These conditions can be exacerbated by allergens or irritants that come into contact with your skin.
3. Nutritional Deficiencies: A lack of certain vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin A, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids, can affect skin health. Ensuring a balanced diet rich in these nutrients can help improve skin condition.
4. Dehydration: Not drinking enough water can lead to overall dehydration, which can manifest as dry skin. It is essential to stay hydrated to maintain skin elasticity and moisture.
5. Underlying Health Conditions: Certain health conditions, such as diabetes or thyroid disorders, can affect skin health. If you have other symptoms or if the cracking persists, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider.
6. Frequent Hand Washing: While you mentioned that you do not often come into contact with water, if you do wash your hands frequently, especially with harsh soaps, this can strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to dryness and cracking.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Moisturizing: While you have tried hand creams and petroleum jelly, consider using thicker creams or ointments specifically designed for extremely dry skin. Look for products containing ingredients like urea, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid, which can help retain moisture.
2. Hydration: Increase your water intake to ensure that your body is well-hydrated. This can help improve skin elasticity and reduce dryness.
3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that certain soaps or chemicals may be irritating your skin, try switching to gentler, fragrance-free products. Wearing gloves while cleaning or doing dishes can also protect your hands.
4. Dietary Changes: Incorporate foods rich in vitamins A, E, and essential fatty acids into your diet. Foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish can help improve skin health.
5. Consult a Dermatologist: If the cracking persists despite your efforts, it may be beneficial to consult a dermatologist. They can assess your skin condition, provide a proper diagnosis, and recommend treatments such as prescription creams or ointments.
6. Humidifier: If you live in a dry climate, consider using a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air, which can help prevent your skin from drying out.
In summary, while dry skin is a common cause of cracking fingers, it is essential to consider other factors such as underlying health conditions, nutritional deficiencies, and environmental influences. By addressing these potential causes and implementing appropriate solutions, you can improve the condition of your skin and reduce the occurrence of cracking. If symptoms persist, seeking professional medical advice is always a prudent course of action.
