Enlarged pores
Hello doctor, recently I've noticed that the pores around my cheeks near my nose have enlarged, although I've never had acne in that area.
However, a few comedones have appeared recently.
Could you please explain why this is happening? Additionally, I would like to ask about the proper usage of toner.
Is it suitable for individuals with acne? Should I clean the comedones before using it? Thank you!

Hello: Areas with excessive oil secretion tend to have more noticeable pores and are more prone to acne.
Toners can be used or omitted.
Sincerely, Dr.

Enlarged pores can be a common concern for many individuals, and understanding the underlying causes and effective skincare tips can help manage this issue. Enlarged pores are often a result of several factors, including genetics, age, skin type, and environmental influences.
Firstly, it's essential to recognize that enlarged pores are typically associated with oily skin types, as excess sebum production can lead to clogged pores, which may stretch them over time. However, even individuals with dry or combination skin can experience enlarged pores, especially if their skin is dehydrated or if they are using heavy products that can clog the pores. Additionally, factors such as sun damage, aging, and hormonal changes can contribute to the appearance of enlarged pores.
In your case, the recent appearance of blackheads around the nose and cheeks, despite not having a history of acne in those areas, could indicate a change in your skin's oil production or an increase in dead skin cell buildup. This can happen due to various reasons, including changes in climate, skincare products, or even stress levels.
When it comes to skincare, there are several tips to help manage enlarged pores and prevent further breakouts:
1. Cleansing: Use a gentle cleanser that effectively removes dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. Cleansing twice a day can help keep the pores clear.
2. Exfoliation: Regular exfoliation is crucial for preventing clogged pores. Consider using chemical exfoliants containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid, which can help dissolve dead skin cells and reduce the appearance of pores. However, be cautious not to over-exfoliate, as this can irritate the skin and lead to more oil production.
3. Toning: A toner can help balance the skin's pH and remove any residual impurities. Look for toners that contain ingredients like witch hazel or tea tree oil, which can help tighten pores and reduce oiliness.
4. Moisturizing: Even if you have oily skin, it's essential to use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer. This will help maintain hydration without clogging the pores.
5. Sunscreen: Protecting your skin from sun damage is vital. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, as UV exposure can lead to collagen breakdown and enlarged pores.
6. Spot Treatment: For the occasional breakout, consider using spot treatments with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to target the affected areas without affecting the surrounding skin.
Regarding your question about using toner if you have acne-prone skin, it is generally safe to use a toner, but you should choose one that is specifically formulated for acne-prone skin. Look for alcohol-free options to avoid drying out your skin, which can lead to increased oil production and worsen the problem.
Before applying toner, it is advisable to cleanse your skin thoroughly. If you have active breakouts or blackheads, you may want to use a gentle exfoliating product to help clear the pores before applying toner. However, avoid aggressive scrubbing or harsh products that can irritate the skin.
In summary, enlarged pores can be managed with a consistent skincare routine that includes cleansing, exfoliating, toning, moisturizing, and sun protection. If you continue to experience issues with enlarged pores or acne, it may be beneficial to consult a dermatologist for personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your skin type and concerns.
