I'm not sure which specialty to see?
I have small hard lumps under the skin on the inner side of my arm and between my chest (in areas with less flesh).
They are not painful or itchy, and I cannot squeeze them out since they are located beneath the skin.
What could this condition be, and which specialist should I see? Thank you.

When it comes to skin bumps that are hard, painless, and located beneath the skin, there are several potential causes to consider. These bumps could be cysts, lipomas, dermatofibromas, or even benign tumors. Each of these conditions has distinct characteristics, and understanding them can help guide you toward the appropriate specialist for diagnosis and treatment.
1. Cysts: These are sac-like structures filled with fluid or semi-solid material. Epidermoid cysts, for example, are common and often appear on the trunk, arms, and face. They are usually harmless and may not require treatment unless they become infected or bothersome.
2. Lipomas: These are benign tumors made of fat tissue. They are soft, movable, and generally painless. Lipomas can occur anywhere on the body, including the arms and chest, and are typically harmless.
3. Dermatofibromas: These are small, firm nodules that can appear on the skin, often on the legs or arms. They are usually harmless but can be removed if they become bothersome or for cosmetic reasons.
4. Benign Tumors: Other types of benign tumors can also present as hard lumps under the skin. These may require further evaluation to determine their nature.
Given the variety of potential causes, the best course of action is to consult a dermatologist. Dermatologists specialize in skin conditions and can provide a thorough examination to determine the nature of the bumps. They may perform a physical examination, and if necessary, a biopsy to rule out any serious conditions.
In addition to seeing a dermatologist, it’s essential to monitor any changes in the bumps, such as growth, changes in color, or any new symptoms like pain or itching. Keeping a record of these changes can be helpful for your doctor during the evaluation.
If you are unable to see a dermatologist immediately, you might consider starting with a primary care physician. They can assess your condition and refer you to a specialist if needed. However, for skin-specific concerns, a dermatologist is typically the most appropriate specialist.
In summary, while the bumps you describe may be benign, it’s crucial to have them evaluated by a dermatologist to ensure proper diagnosis and management. Early intervention can help address any potential issues and provide peace of mind. If you have any additional symptoms or concerns, be sure to discuss those with your healthcare provider as well.
