Could I be pregnant?
I had sexual intercourse with my girlfriend around January 7th.
She was supposed to get her period around the 15th, but it didn't arrive until the 26th, and the flow was very light, similar to the end of her usual period.
We used a pregnancy test on the 19th and again on the 24th, both of which showed negative results.
Is there still a possibility of pregnancy, or is there another way to confirm?

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Typically, pregnancy can be detected about two weeks after conception.
Blood tests are more accurate than urine pregnancy tests.
If you wait another week, an early pregnancy ultrasound may not show anything, and it is also possible that there is no pregnancy or an abnormal pregnancy, such as a blighted ovum or an ectopic pregnancy.
You can come to the clinic for further confirmation.
Sincerely, Dr.
Lu.

When it comes to understanding unusual menstrual changes and the possibility of pregnancy, it is essential to consider several factors that can influence a woman's menstrual cycle. In your case, you mentioned having sexual intercourse around January 7th, with an expected menstrual period around January 15th, but the period did not arrive until January 26th and was notably lighter than usual. You also performed pregnancy tests on January 19th and 24th, both of which returned negative results.
Firstly, it is important to understand that menstrual cycles can vary significantly from month to month due to a variety of reasons, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, illness, or even changes in routine. A late period, especially one that is lighter than usual, can be concerning, but it does not automatically indicate pregnancy.
The timing of your sexual activity is also crucial. If you had unprotected intercourse on January 7th, and your menstrual cycle is regular (typically around 28 days), you would have been in the luteal phase of your cycle when implantation could occur if fertilization took place. However, if your period arrived on January 26th, it suggests that menstruation occurred, which typically indicates that pregnancy did not happen.
Regarding the pregnancy tests, home pregnancy tests are generally reliable when used correctly. They work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in urine, which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. If both tests were negative and your period eventually arrived, it is unlikely that you are pregnant. However, if there is still doubt, you might consider the following options:
1. Wait and Observe: If your menstrual cycle is irregular, it might be worth waiting for another cycle to see if your periods normalize.
2. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If you continue to experience unusual menstrual patterns or have concerns about potential pregnancy, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test for pregnancy, which is more sensitive than home urine tests and can detect lower levels of hCG.
3. Ultrasound Examination: If there are ongoing concerns about your menstrual cycle or potential pregnancy, an ultrasound can help assess the state of the uterus and ovaries.
4. Track Your Cycle: Keeping a record of your menstrual cycle, including any unusual symptoms, can help you and your healthcare provider identify patterns or issues that may need further investigation.
In summary, while the signs you described do not strongly indicate pregnancy, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and to rule out any underlying health issues. Understanding your body and menstrual cycle is key, and professional guidance can provide clarity and peace of mind.
