Feeling Something Stuck in Your Nasopharynx? Here's What to Know - Otolaryngology

It seems that a grain of rice is stuck in the nasopharyngeal tube?

Occasionally, when I eat, I feel like a small piece, similar to a grain of millet, gets stuck in my nasopharynx, and it only happens on one side, either the left or the right.
It feels like it is lodged where post-nasal drip occurs, making it difficult to swallow or cough out, which is quite uncomfortable.
Over time, this situation has led to a foul odor in my mouth, causing me significant distress.
I have experienced similar issues in the past but did not seek medical attention.
Eventually, after a while of feeling stuck, I sneezed forcefully and expelled a phlegm that was similar to salty post-nasal drip, which helped me dislodge the foreign object.
It turned out to be a small yellow piece that was the source of the bad breath.
Now I am facing the same problem again and would like to ask a doctor for help.
I had a history of rhinitis as a child and have been able to clear mucus from deep within my nasal passages.
I would like to know if this method can help remove the foreign object.

Dear Mr.
Hong: Hello, your issue can be examined and addressed by an otolaryngologist, and it should be possible to obtain secretions.

Feeling something stuck in your nasopharynx can be quite uncomfortable and concerning. This sensation, often described as a feeling of obstruction or a lump in the throat, can occur for various reasons, and it’s important to understand the underlying causes and appropriate management strategies.

Possible Causes
1. Postnasal Drip: This is one of the most common causes of the sensation of something stuck in the throat. When mucus from the nasal passages drips down the back of the throat, it can create a feeling of obstruction. This often occurs with allergies, sinus infections, or colds.

2. Foreign Body Sensation: Sometimes, small particles of food or other materials can become lodged in the throat or nasopharynx, leading to discomfort. In your case, the description of a small yellow object that you expelled after a sneeze suggests that this could be a possibility.

3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can cause irritation in the throat and lead to a sensation of something being stuck. This is often accompanied by other symptoms such as heartburn or sour taste in the mouth.

4. Tonsillitis or Pharyngitis: Inflammation of the tonsils or throat can lead to discomfort and a feeling of obstruction. This is often accompanied by pain, difficulty swallowing, or fever.

5. Anatomical Variations: Some individuals may have anatomical variations in their throat or nasal passages that predispose them to feelings of obstruction.

Management Strategies
1. Hydration: Keeping well-hydrated can help thin mucus and reduce the sensation of obstruction. Drinking warm fluids, such as herbal tea or broth, can be soothing.

2. Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or a neti pot can help clear out mucus and allergens from the nasal passages, potentially alleviating the sensation of something stuck.

3. Avoid Irritants: If you have a history of nasal allergies, try to avoid known triggers such as smoke, strong odors, or allergens.

4. Gargling Salt Water: Gargling with warm salt water can help soothe an irritated throat and may help dislodge any small particles that are causing discomfort.

5. Consultation with a Healthcare Provider: If the sensation persists, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider. They may perform a physical examination, possibly including an endoscopy, to visualize the throat and nasopharynx and identify any underlying issues.

6. Addressing Oral Hygiene: If you notice an unpleasant odor, maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial. Regular brushing, flossing, and possibly using an antibacterial mouthwash can help reduce bad breath and improve overall oral health.

When to Seek Immediate Care
If you experience severe pain, difficulty breathing, or if the sensation of obstruction worsens, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a more serious condition that requires prompt intervention.

Conclusion
Feeling something stuck in your nasopharynx can be distressing, but understanding the potential causes and management strategies can help alleviate discomfort. If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare professional is essential to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment. Remember, self-diagnosis can be misleading, and professional guidance is invaluable in addressing health concerns effectively.
