Nasal discharge with blood?
Hello Doctor: I am 23 years old.
When I woke up yesterday, I had some nasal congestion and a little runny nose.
Then, when I blew my nose, I expelled a large amount of clear mucus mixed with quite a bit of dark red blood.
Afterward, I wiped the inside of my nostrils a few times with tissue and noticed a small amount of blood.
I have a history of nasal allergies, so I have experienced minor blood streaks in the past, but the amount this time is much more significant, which has me a bit worried.
I would like to know if this is serious.
Thank you for your assistance.

Hello! Generally, nosebleeds are common, but a small percentage still need to rule out the possibility of nasal tumors.
It's better to return to the hospital for a follow-up.
Thank you for your question!

Hello! It's understandable to feel concerned when you notice blood in your nasal mucus, especially if it's more than what you've experienced in the past. Let's break down the potential causes and what you should consider moving forward.
Firstly, the presence of blood in nasal mucus can often be attributed to several common factors. One of the most frequent causes is nasal mucosal irritation or injury. This can happen due to various reasons, including:
1. Dry Air: Given that you mentioned experiencing nasal congestion and blood in your mucus, it's possible that dry air—especially during winter months or in heated indoor environments—has led to the drying and cracking of the nasal mucosa. This can result in minor bleeding when you blow your nose.
2. Nasal Allergies: Since you have a history of nasal allergies, this could be a contributing factor. Allergic rhinitis can cause inflammation and swelling in the nasal passages, making the mucosa more susceptible to bleeding, especially when you blow your nose forcefully.
3. Nasal Polyps or Sinusitis: Chronic nasal conditions, such as nasal polyps or sinusitis, can also lead to bleeding. These conditions can cause inflammation and irritation of the nasal passages, which may result in blood appearing in your mucus.
4. Infection: An upper respiratory infection, such as a cold or sinus infection, can lead to increased nasal congestion and irritation, potentially causing bleeding.
5. Underlying Health Issues: Although less common, certain health conditions, such as clotting disorders or hypertension, can lead to more significant bleeding. However, these are typically accompanied by other symptoms.
Given your situation, here are a few recommendations:
- Stay Hydrated: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated can help keep the nasal mucosa moist and reduce the likelihood of bleeding.
- Humidify Your Environment: Using a humidifier in your home can help add moisture to the air, which may alleviate dryness in your nasal passages.
- Gentle Nose Blowing: When you need to blow your nose, do so gently to avoid further irritation or injury to the nasal mucosa.
- Nasal Saline Sprays: Consider using saline nasal sprays or rinses to keep your nasal passages moist and help clear out any irritants.
If the bleeding persists, increases in frequency, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms (such as significant pain, swelling, or changes in vision), it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend further evaluation, such as a nasal endoscopy or imaging studies, to rule out any underlying issues.
In summary, while occasional blood in nasal mucus can be alarming, it is often due to benign causes such as dryness or irritation. However, given the change in the amount of blood you are experiencing, it is important to monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice if necessary. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, so don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
