Blurred vision!
Dear Doctor: In recent months, I have frequently seen many blurry shadows, as if I am waving my hand in front of my eyes and can see countless afterimages, like I can perceive all the trails of movement.
I initially thought it was due to fatigue, but I have recently noticed that this condition worsens when I wake up, and it even causes dizziness! Doctor, what does this indicate about my eye health? I am very afraid that I might go blind! My current myopia is -300 degrees in one eye and -250 degrees in the other.
What could be wrong with my eyes? (An anxious person~)

It sounds like you are experiencing some concerning visual symptoms, and it's understandable to feel anxious about your eye health. Based on your description, seeing multiple blurry shadows or trails, especially upon waking, can be indicative of several potential issues.
Firstly, the phenomenon you are describing, where you see "trails" or "ghosting" of objects, could be related to a few different factors. One possibility is that you are experiencing a form of visual disturbance known as "visual snow" or "afterimages." This can occur when the visual system is overstimulated or fatigued, leading to temporary visual disturbances. However, if these symptoms are persistent and worsening, it is crucial to consider other underlying causes.
Another potential cause could be related to your refractive error, given your prescription of -3.00 and -2.50 diopters for myopia (nearsightedness). If your glasses or contact lenses are not providing adequate correction, or if there has been a change in your vision that has not been addressed, this could lead to visual disturbances. Additionally, if you are experiencing dry eyes or eye strain, especially from prolonged screen time or insufficient blinking, this can exacerbate blurry vision and discomfort.
The fact that you are experiencing these symptoms more severely upon waking could suggest that your eyes are not adequately lubricated during sleep, leading to dryness and irritation. This is particularly common in individuals who sleep with their eyes partially open or who have underlying dry eye syndrome.
Moreover, if you are experiencing dizziness along with these visual symptoms, it could indicate a more complex issue. Dizziness can sometimes be linked to visual disturbances, especially if your brain is struggling to process visual information correctly. This could be due to a variety of reasons, including vestibular issues or even anxiety, which can manifest physically as dizziness.
Given your concerns about potential vision loss, it is essential to seek a comprehensive eye examination from an eye care professional. They can assess your visual acuity, check for any changes in your prescription, and evaluate the health of your eyes. Tests such as a dilated eye exam, visual field testing, and possibly imaging studies can help rule out conditions like retinal detachment, cataracts, or other ocular diseases that could contribute to your symptoms.
In the meantime, consider implementing some eye care practices to alleviate your symptoms. Ensure you are taking regular breaks from screens (the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds), stay hydrated, and use lubricating eye drops if you suspect dryness.
Lastly, managing stress and ensuring you get adequate sleep can also help reduce visual fatigue. If you find that your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical attention. Your eye health is crucial, and addressing these symptoms early can help prevent potential complications.
