Vaginal rejuvenation
Hello, doctor! Since I gave birth to my first child, I have been experiencing frequent vaginal infections.
Sometimes, there is a discharge, and for a period, there was a strong fishy odor coming from my vagina! A friend mentioned that this is because after giving birth, the vagina may not be as tight as it was before, making it more susceptible to infections.
Is this true? They also said that after undergoing vaginal rejuvenation, the vagina would become tighter and less prone to infections.
Is this true? If I decide to undergo vaginal rejuvenation, will the procedure be painful? Will there be pain after the surgery? What is the approximate cost? I do not have health insurance!

Dr. Li Guanghan reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello: It is indeed common to experience vaginitis after childbirth, but it is not necessarily related to the tightness or looseness of the vagina.
Unless the vaginal sutures are too close to the anal opening, vaginal reconstruction is not required.
If the discharge has a fishy odor, it may indicate a Chlamydia infection, which can be treated with tetracycline antibiotics.

Vaginal rejuvenation is a topic that has garnered significant attention in recent years, especially among women who have experienced changes in their vaginal health after childbirth. It is essential to address the myths, costs, and recovery associated with this procedure to provide a clearer understanding.
Firstly, it is a common belief that childbirth can lead to a looser vaginal canal, which may contribute to issues such as recurrent infections or a feeling of decreased tightness. While it is true that childbirth can stretch the vaginal tissues, leading to changes in sensation and function, it is not the sole reason for recurrent infections. Factors such as hormonal changes, personal hygiene, and overall health can also play significant roles in vaginal health.
Regarding the claim that vaginal rejuvenation can prevent infections by tightening the vaginal canal, this is somewhat misleading. While procedures like vaginoplasty can improve the structural integrity of the vagina, they do not directly address the underlying causes of infections. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider to identify the root causes of recurrent infections, which may include bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, or sexually transmitted infections, rather than attributing them solely to changes from childbirth.
When considering vaginal rejuvenation, it is important to understand the different types of procedures available. Surgical options, such as vaginoplasty, involve the physical tightening of the vaginal canal and may require anesthesia. Non-surgical options, such as laser treatments, are less invasive and can stimulate collagen production in the vaginal tissues, potentially improving elasticity and sensation.
Patients often express concern about pain during and after the procedure. Surgical options typically involve some level of discomfort, which can be managed with pain medications prescribed by the surgeon. Non-surgical treatments may have minimal discomfort, often described as a sensation of warmth or mild pressure. Recovery times vary depending on the procedure; surgical recovery may take several weeks, while non-surgical options often allow for a quicker return to normal activities.
As for the costs associated with vaginal rejuvenation, they can vary widely based on the type of procedure, the surgeon's expertise, and the geographical location. Surgical procedures can range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more, while non-surgical treatments may cost between $1,000 and $5,000 per session. It is important to note that these procedures are often not covered by insurance, as they are considered elective.
In summary, while vaginal rejuvenation can offer benefits for women seeking to address changes after childbirth, it is essential to approach the topic with a clear understanding of the myths and realities. Consulting with a qualified healthcare provider can help determine the best course of action based on individual needs and health concerns. Additionally, addressing underlying issues related to vaginal health, such as infections, should be prioritized alongside any cosmetic procedures.
