Concerns About Slow Healing After Circumcision: What to Know - Urology

Share to:

My family is very concerned about my issue?

I had a circumcision on January 26, and now it is February 12.
The area under the glans is still swollen, and the stitches have not completely dissolved.
The doctor said I still cannot get it wet...
I'm really worried.
Why is my wound healing slower than others? Is it a problem with my body, or is it the surgeon's technique? Please let me know.

Xiao Ming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/02/12

Dr. Lai Ronghao reply Urology

Hello Xiaoming: The stitches typically dissolve in about 2 to 3 weeks.
Generally, wounds should not be exposed to water for 3 days, unless there is an infection, in which case they should not come into contact with water.
It is best to have a follow-up examination at the outpatient clinic.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

After undergoing a circumcision on January 26, it is understandable to have concerns about the healing process, especially when you notice swelling and the presence of stitches (or the "meat line" as you described) that have not yet dissolved. As of February 12, it has been a little over two weeks since your procedure, and while some individuals may heal more quickly, others may take longer due to various factors.

Factors Influencing Healing After Circumcision
1. Individual Healing Rates: Each person's body responds differently to surgical procedures. Factors such as age, overall health, and underlying medical conditions (like diabetes or immune disorders) can significantly affect healing times. If you have any chronic health issues, they may contribute to a slower recovery.

2. Surgical Technique: The skill and technique of the surgeon can also play a role in the healing process. However, it is essential to remember that even with the best techniques, individual healing responses can vary widely.

3. Post-Operative Care: Following the surgeon's post-operative care instructions is crucial for optimal healing. If you have been advised to avoid water exposure, it is likely to prevent infection and ensure that the area remains dry and clean. Adhering to these guidelines is essential for a smooth recovery.

4. Infection: One of the most common concerns after any surgical procedure is the risk of infection. Signs of infection include increased redness, swelling, warmth, discharge, or fever. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is vital to contact your healthcare provider immediately.

5. Swelling and Stitches: Swelling can be a normal part of the healing process, especially in the first few weeks after surgery. The stitches used in circumcision may take time to dissolve, and their presence can contribute to the feeling of tightness or discomfort. If the swelling persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Recommendations
- Follow-Up with Your Surgeon: If you have concerns about your healing process, the best course of action is to schedule a follow-up appointment with your surgeon. They can assess the healing progress, check for any signs of complications, and provide personalized advice.

- Avoid Irritation: Be cautious about any activities that may irritate the area, such as vigorous exercise or sexual activity, until you receive clearance from your doctor.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the healing site for any changes. If you experience increased pain, swelling, or any unusual symptoms, reach out to your healthcare provider.

- Patience is Key: Healing can take time, and while it is natural to feel anxious, try to be patient with your body. Most circumcision procedures heal well within a few weeks, but some may take longer.

In conclusion, while it is concerning to experience slower healing, it is not uncommon. Many factors can influence the recovery process, and it is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your concerns. They are best equipped to evaluate your situation and provide guidance tailored to your needs.
