Can Black Eye Masks Really Help Treat Myopia? A Closer Look - Ophthalmology

I saw an advertisement on a channel during the holidays for a type of black eye mask that has five small holes.
When worn, it allows for clear vision at various distances.
However, I'm unsure if this can actually treat myopia.
So, I took the opportunity to visit the store and personally tried it on.
Indeed, I could see more clearly, but there was nothing inside the mask—just the black eye mask and the holder for it.
They are selling it for NT$1980.
I have tried using my fingers in small gaps to achieve similar effects, but I wonder if wearing this type of black eye mask can truly treat myopia.
Could you please help clarify this? My email is [email protected].

Dr. Huang Bozhen reply Ophthalmology

Explanation: This effect is known as the PINHOLE EFFECT in ophthalmology, and it does indeed provide clearer vision.
However, how could you possibly wear it all day while going about your activities? So, be sure not to be misled.

The black eye masks you mentioned, often marketed with small pinholes, utilize a principle known as the "pinhole effect." This effect can temporarily improve visual clarity for individuals with refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness), by allowing only a narrow beam of light to enter the eye. This can help to reduce the blur caused by the eye's inability to focus light correctly on the retina. However, it is crucial to understand that while these masks may provide a temporary improvement in vision, they do not treat or cure myopia.

Myopia is primarily caused by the elongation of the eyeball or an overly curved cornea, which leads to light being focused in front of the retina rather than directly on it. The use of pinhole glasses or masks can help to improve vision by reducing the size of the blur circle on the retina, but they do not address the underlying structural issues of the eye. Therefore, while wearing such a mask may help you see more clearly in the short term, it does not provide a long-term solution for myopia.

Moreover, the experience you had while trying on the mask—seeing more clearly—can also be replicated by simply looking through a small opening, such as a finger's gap. This indicates that the improvement in clarity is not due to any therapeutic effect of the mask itself but rather the optical principle at play.

It is also important to consider the practicality of using such masks. They are not designed for prolonged wear, and wearing them continuously would be impractical and uncomfortable. Additionally, relying on these masks could lead to neglecting proper eye care and regular eye examinations, which are essential for managing myopia effectively.

For individuals concerned about myopia, it is advisable to consult with an eye care professional. They can provide a comprehensive eye examination and discuss appropriate treatment options, which may include corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses), orthokeratology (specialized contact lenses worn overnight to reshape the cornea), or refractive surgery (like LASIK) for eligible candidates.

In summary, while black eye masks with pinholes can provide a temporary improvement in vision due to the pinhole effect, they do not treat or cure myopia. It is essential to seek professional advice for managing myopia and to explore effective treatment options that address the condition's root causes. Regular eye care and appropriate corrective measures are the best ways to maintain good vision and eye health.
