Scrotal pain after DIY activities?
I have been experiencing intermittent pain in the area below my scrotum after doing DIY activities.
The duration of the pain varies, sometimes lasting 10 to 20 minutes, and other times 30 to 40 minutes, gradually subsiding.
The intensity of the pain also differs; sometimes it is quite severe, while other times it is mild.
Is this normal? I had a hernia as a child, and after surgery, the doctor mentioned that there is a possibility of recurrence, so I am wondering if this is related.
Should I see a doctor?

Hello: Pain below the scrotum after masturbation may be caused by rapid contraction of the pelvic and perineal muscles.
If this occurs consistently, it may be necessary to rule out issues with the prostate or seminal vesicles.
Please visit the urology outpatient clinic.
Recurrence of hernia surgery typically occurs in the groin area, not in the scrotum or perineum.
Sincerely, Dr.

Experiencing post-DIY scrotal pain can be concerning, especially given your medical history of hernia surgery. It’s important to understand that while some discomfort can be normal after certain activities, persistent or severe pain should not be ignored.
Firstly, the variability in the intensity and duration of your pain is noteworthy. Pain that lasts from 10 to 40 minutes and fluctuates in intensity could be indicative of several underlying issues. Given your history of hernia surgery, it’s possible that the pain could be related to scar tissue or changes in the anatomy of the area. Hernias can recur, and if you have experienced any strain or pressure in the groin area during your DIY activities, this could potentially lead to discomfort or a recurrence of hernia symptoms.
In general, scrotal pain can arise from various causes, including:
1. Inguinal Hernia: If you had a hernia in the past, it’s possible that it could recur, especially if you’ve engaged in activities that put strain on the abdominal wall. Symptoms of a recurrent hernia may include a bulge in the groin area and pain that worsens with activity.
2. Testicular Issues: Conditions such as epididymitis (inflammation of the epididymis) or orchitis (inflammation of the testicle) can cause pain in the scrotal area. These conditions may be accompanied by swelling, redness, or tenderness.
3. Nerve Irritation: Activities that involve heavy lifting or straining can irritate nerves in the groin area, leading to pain that may come and go.
4. Muscle Strain: Overexertion during DIY projects can lead to muscle strain in the groin or lower abdominal area, which can manifest as pain in the scrotum.
5. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in the scrotum can be referred from other areas, such as the lower back or pelvis.
Given these possibilities, it is advisable to seek medical attention, especially since you have a history of hernia surgery. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess for any abnormalities in the scrotum or surrounding structures.
When you visit the doctor, be prepared to provide detailed information about your symptoms, including:
- The exact location of the pain.
- Any activities that seem to trigger or worsen the pain.
- Any additional symptoms, such as swelling, redness, or changes in urination.
- Your medical history, particularly regarding your previous hernia surgery.
In summary, while some discomfort may be normal after physical activities, the nature of your pain, especially with your medical history, warrants a professional evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent potential complications and provide you with peace of mind. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and get the appropriate care.
