Abnormal discharge from the left eye?

Hello, Doctor: Since this evening, I have noticed a light yellow sticky discharge coming from my left eye.
At first, I thought it was just regular eye crust, but it keeps appearing and is affecting my vision in that eye.
Currently, my left eye looks inexplicably red and swollen; it doesn't itch, but it appears as if it's crying.
I'm not sure what this condition might be and whether I need to visit a hospital or clinic.
Thank you for your response.

Your eyes may be experiencing seborrheic conjunctivitis, with the left eye being the most commonly affected area.
If you consume excessively greasy or irritating foods, combined with irregular sleeping patterns, you may exhibit the aforementioned symptoms.
It is necessary to seek treatment from an ophthalmologist.

More Info

The presence of yellow discharge from the left eye, especially when accompanied by redness and swelling, can indicate several potential conditions that warrant further investigation. Given your description, it is essential to consider the following possible causes:
1. Conjunctivitis: This is one of the most common causes of eye discharge. Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or irritants. Bacterial conjunctivitis often presents with a yellow or green discharge, while viral conjunctivitis may produce a watery discharge. Allergic conjunctivitis typically causes itching and redness but can also lead to some discharge.

2. Blepharitis: This condition involves inflammation of the eyelid margins and can lead to crusty eyelids and discharge. It is often associated with seborrheic dermatitis or staphylococcal infection.

3. Blocked Tear Duct: If the tear duct is blocked, tears may not drain properly, leading to excessive tearing and discharge. This can cause the eye to appear red and swollen.

4. Foreign Body: Sometimes, a foreign object in the eye can cause irritation and discharge. If you suspect this, it is crucial to avoid rubbing the eye and seek medical attention.

5. Corneal Ulcer or Infection: A more serious condition, a corneal ulcer can cause significant pain, redness, and discharge. This condition requires prompt medical attention to prevent vision loss.

Given that your left eye is exhibiting persistent yellow discharge, redness, and swelling, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. An eye care professional can perform a thorough examination, including a visual acuity test, slit-lamp examination, and possibly cultures or swabs of the discharge to determine the underlying cause.

When to Seek Help
You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Severe pain in the eye
- Vision changes (blurriness, loss of vision)
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Discharge that is green or has a foul odor
- Symptoms that worsen or do not improve with home care

Home Care and Prevention
While waiting for your appointment, you can take some steps to alleviate discomfort:
- Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes: This can worsen irritation and introduce more bacteria.

- Warm Compresses: Applying a warm, damp cloth to the affected eye can help soothe irritation and may assist in unclogging any blocked glands.

- Maintain Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face and eyes.

Conclusion
In summary, the yellow discharge from your left eye, along with redness and swelling, could be indicative of several conditions, with conjunctivitis being a common cause. However, due to the potential for more serious conditions, it is essential to consult an eye care professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure the health of your eyes.
