Injuries from Bicycle Falls (Emergency)
Hello Doctor: Two days ago, on March 5th, I fell off my bike.
I later went to see a doctor, who said I had a trauma.
Is that a abrasion? The injured areas are my right hand, right knee, and the top of my foot.
I did not have a fever, but I received a tetanus shot and the doctor cleaned the wound and applied an ointment.
I was given three medications: Strocainc tab (Mucaine) for stomach issues, Bolaxin 500mg tab as a muscle relaxant, and Voren EMC 50mg Cap for fever, inflammation, and pain relief.
The nurse said to come back if I experience any "redness and swelling," but I asked her if the swelling I have now counts, and she said it doesn't.
However, I feel like I am limping when I walk (it has been like this since the injury).
I also feel some pain around the wound.
I am taking good care of the wound and trying to keep it dry, but I am very worried about the possibility of a bacterial infection.
Could it be a bruise? Will applying the ointment and taking the medication be sufficient? Also, what symptoms are associated with cellulitis? I'm quite anxious about this.
Thank you, Doctor, for your patience in reading and answering my concerns!

Hello: 1.
A superficial abrasion is referred to as an abrasion.
2.
When injured, the wound may show slight redness and swelling of the epidermis, but if the redness and swelling become more pronounced, accompanied by increased warmth and pain at the wound site, it is advisable to return for a follow-up appointment.
If you are still uncertain, it is recommended that you consult a physician to examine the wound.
3.
Cellulitis is a condition caused by bacterial infection of the subcutaneous tissue, which may also present with redness, swelling, warmth, and even fever.
Wishing you safety.

More Info
Injuries from bicycle falls can vary widely in severity and type, depending on the circumstances of the accident. Based on your description, it sounds like you sustained abrasions and possibly some soft tissue injuries to your right hand, knee, and foot. Let's break down the symptoms and treatment options for your situation.
Symptoms
1. Abrasions: These are superficial injuries to the skin, often resulting in redness, swelling, and pain. They can also lead to bruising (ecchymosis) around the affected area.
2. Swelling: The swelling you are experiencing could be due to inflammation from the injury. This is a normal response of the body to trauma.
3. Pain: You mentioned that you feel pain around the injury site, which is common with any trauma. The pain can be exacerbated by movement or pressure on the area.
4. Difficulty Walking: The "limping" you described could be due to pain or instability in the knee or foot, which may be a result of the injury.
5. Concerns about Infection: You are right to be cautious about infection. Signs of infection include increased redness, warmth, swelling, pus or drainage from the wound, and fever.
Treatment
1. Wound Care: Continue to keep the wound clean and dry. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding wound care, including the use of topical ointments. If you notice increased redness or drainage, seek medical attention.
2. Medications: The medications prescribed to you, including a muscle relaxant, anti-inflammatory, and pain reliever, are appropriate for managing pain and inflammation. Make sure to take them as directed.
3. Rest and Ice: Resting the affected area is crucial. Applying ice can help reduce swelling and numb the pain. Use ice packs for 15-20 minutes every hour as needed.
4. Elevation: Elevating your leg can help reduce swelling. Try to keep your knee and foot elevated above the level of your heart when resting.
5. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If the swelling worsens, or if you develop fever or other signs of infection, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Potential Complications
- Infection: As you mentioned, there is a risk of infection, especially with open wounds. If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or pus, seek medical attention.
- Hematoma: A bruise or hematoma can form if blood vessels are damaged, leading to localized swelling and discoloration.
- Soft Tissue Injury: If you continue to experience significant pain or instability, it may indicate a more serious injury, such as a ligament sprain or tear, which may require further evaluation.
Conclusion
It is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen. They may recommend imaging studies (like an X-ray) to rule out fractures or more severe injuries. In the meantime, continue to care for your wounds, manage your pain with medications, and avoid activities that exacerbate your symptoms. With proper care and monitoring, most minor injuries from falls can heal well, allowing you to return to your normal activities. Always listen to your body and seek medical advice when in doubt.
