Facial asymmetry due to injury?
I have had a facial laceration (on my chin) from a car accident for six months.
I was supposed to see a plastic surgeon and continued for a month or two.
After the doctor administered injections to soften the scar, he asked if I wanted laser treatment.
I had scheduled an appointment, but then I heard from others that it might not be effective, so I decided not to go through with the surgery.
However, the appearance of the scar is somewhat uneven, and when I pinch the scar, I can feel that the tissue underneath is not smooth.
My chin also appears asymmetrical when I smile.
Will the scar flatten out and improve over time, leading to a more symmetrical face, or is surgery necessary? Given that the scar has been present for a while and my face still looks off, should I continue to see a plastic surgeon? Does laser treatment only lighten the appearance of the scar rather than smooth it out? Since the tissue is uneven, I would appreciate your clarification, thank you!

There are many reasons for uneven scars.
If they remain irregular, it is advisable to consult a plastic surgeon.
Laser surgery can help to lighten the color, but achieving a smooth surface depends on the nature of the scar.

Addressing facial asymmetry and scarring after an accident can be a complex issue, particularly when it involves the chin and lower face. In your case, it seems that you have been dealing with the aftermath of a facial laceration for about six months, and you are experiencing concerns regarding the appearance of your scar and facial symmetry.
Firstly, it is important to understand that scars can take time to mature. Initially, they may appear raised, discolored, or uneven, but over time, many scars can flatten and fade. However, this process can vary significantly from person to person, depending on factors such as skin type, the depth of the injury, and individual healing responses. In some cases, scars may not improve sufficiently on their own, leading to ongoing concerns about appearance and function.
You mentioned that you have already consulted with a plastic surgeon and received treatments aimed at softening the scar. This is a common first step in scar management. Treatments such as silicone gel sheets, steroid injections, and laser therapy can help improve the texture and appearance of scars. Laser treatments, in particular, can be effective in reducing redness and improving the overall texture of the skin, but they typically do not "flatten" the scar in the way that surgical intervention might.
Regarding your question about whether surgery is necessary, it largely depends on the severity of the asymmetry and the degree to which the scar affects your quality of life. If the scar is significantly affecting your self-esteem or causing functional issues (such as difficulty moving the jaw or discomfort), it may be worth considering surgical options. Surgical revision can help to remove or reposition scar tissue, potentially leading to a more symmetrical appearance.
In terms of your specific concerns about the unevenness of the scar and facial asymmetry, it is advisable to continue consultations with a plastic surgeon who specializes in facial aesthetics. They can provide a thorough evaluation and discuss the potential benefits and risks of further interventions, including surgical options. It is also important to communicate your expectations and concerns clearly with your surgeon, as this will help them tailor their recommendations to your specific situation.
In summary, while some scars may improve over time, persistent issues with asymmetry and uneven texture may warrant further evaluation and possibly surgical intervention. Laser treatments can be beneficial, but they primarily address surface appearance rather than underlying structural issues. Continuing to work with a qualified plastic surgeon will provide you with the best guidance on how to achieve your desired outcomes. Remember, the decision to pursue additional treatments should be based on a combination of medical advice, personal comfort, and aesthetic goals.
