Menstrual issues
Hello, Doctor: I am currently 26 years old and have no sexual experience, but I have not had my period for two months.
The last one ended around January 20th, and I usually have my period every month, with each cycle being about one to two days later than the previous one.
Even during my university entrance exams, my period would come right after the exams, so I have never experienced a delay of two months like this.
I wonder if this could be due to work-related stress? Also, in my situation (not having my period for less than three months), do I need to seek medical attention? Would it be more appropriate to see a doctor if I still haven't had my period next month? Thank you for your response, Doctor :)
Rou Rou, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/03/27

If there is no improvement next month, you can return for a consultation, which may be due to work-related stress.
Sincerely, Lu Lizheng.

It's understandable to feel concerned about menstrual irregularities, especially when your cycle has been consistent in the past. Given your age and the fact that you have not experienced any sexual activity, there are several factors to consider regarding your missed periods.
Firstly, it's important to recognize that stress can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. The body responds to stress in various ways, and hormonal fluctuations can lead to delayed or missed periods. Other common factors that can cause menstrual irregularities include changes in weight (either gain or loss), excessive exercise, hormonal imbalances, and underlying medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders.
In your case, since you mentioned that your last period was in late January and you have not had a period since, it is advisable to monitor your situation closely. If your period does not return in the next month, it would be prudent to seek medical advice. While it is not uncommon for young women to experience occasional irregularities, especially due to stress or lifestyle changes, a two-month delay is significant enough to warrant a consultation with a healthcare provider.
When you do decide to seek medical advice, your doctor will likely conduct a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and possibly some laboratory tests to check hormone levels. This will help determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.
In the meantime, here are some steps you can take to help manage stress and promote overall menstrual health:
1. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Ensure you are eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Staying hydrated is also important.
2. Exercise Regularly: Engage in moderate physical activity, which can help reduce stress and promote hormonal balance. However, avoid excessive exercise, as it can have the opposite effect.
3. Practice Stress Management Techniques: Consider incorporating relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises into your routine to help manage stress levels.
4. Track Your Cycle: Keep a record of your menstrual cycle, noting any irregularities, symptoms, and lifestyle changes. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
5. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it’s easy to turn to the internet for answers, it’s important to avoid self-diagnosing. Each individual’s situation is unique, and a healthcare provider can offer personalized advice.
In summary, while it may be tempting to wait and see if your period returns next month, it is wise to be proactive about your health. If you continue to experience missed periods or other concerning symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and peace of mind.
