Does phimosis affect sensation?

I often experience loss of erection during intercourse with my girlfriend, particularly in certain common positions.
Even with stimulation, I can't achieve an erection again while using a condom, but I can get an erection when I remove the condom.
Recently, I wondered if this could be due to having a long foreskin, which might be pushing forward and covering the glans and the frenulum during intercourse, combined with the additional layer of the condom, resulting in reduced sensation.
I've also noticed that sex doesn't feel as pleasurable as masturbation, and I'm curious if this is related.
If this is the case, what methods can I use to address this issue without undergoing circumcision while still using a condom?

Hello: This is a matter of mindset; if you don't think this way, it won't affect your pleasure.

Excess foreskin, or phimosis, can indeed affect sensation during intercourse and may contribute to difficulties in maintaining an erection. The presence of excess foreskin can lead to a few issues that might explain the experiences you've described.

Firstly, when the foreskin is longer than usual, it can cover the glans (the head of the penis) during sexual activity. This can reduce the direct stimulation of the glans, which is highly sensitive and plays a significant role in sexual arousal and pleasure. If the foreskin is pushed forward during intercourse, it may create a barrier that dulls sensation, making it harder to maintain an erection, especially in certain positions where friction is altered.

Additionally, the use of condoms can further decrease sensation. Condoms are designed to provide a barrier for protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancy, but they can also reduce sensitivity for some men. When combined with excess foreskin, the sensation may be significantly diminished, leading to difficulties in achieving or maintaining an erection. This could explain why you find it easier to become aroused without a condom.

If you suspect that your foreskin is contributing to these issues, there are several options to consider that do not involve circumcision:
1. Foreskin Retraction: During sexual activity, you can try to manually retract the foreskin to expose the glans. This may enhance sensation and improve your experience. However, this should be done gently to avoid discomfort or injury.

2. Lubrication: Using a water-based or silicone-based lubricant can help reduce friction and enhance sensation during intercourse. This can be particularly helpful if the foreskin is causing discomfort or if the condom is reducing sensitivity.

3. Different Condom Types: Experimenting with different types of condoms may also help. Some condoms are designed to enhance sensitivity, while others are thinner. Finding the right fit and type may improve your experience.

4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If you continue to experience issues, it may be beneficial to consult a urologist or a sexual health specialist. They can assess your situation and provide personalized advice, which may include exercises to help with foreskin retraction or other non-surgical options.

5. Pelvic Floor Exercises: Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles through Kegel exercises may help improve erectile function and control during intercourse. This can enhance overall sexual performance and satisfaction.

6. Counseling or Therapy: Sometimes, psychological factors can contribute to erectile difficulties. Speaking with a therapist who specializes in sexual health can help address any underlying issues, such as anxiety or performance pressure.

In summary, excess foreskin can indeed affect sensation during intercourse and contribute to difficulties in maintaining an erection. However, there are non-surgical methods to address these concerns. It's essential to communicate openly with your partner about your experiences and consider seeking professional advice for tailored solutions.
