1.
Do patients with hypospadias need to serve in the military? If so, is the duration of service the same as for others?
2.
Does hypospadias affect testicular size?

Yilü, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/03/29

Dr. Liu Jianting reply Urology

Hypospadias does not affect testicular size.
According to the Ministry of the Interior's Military Service Agency classification standards, the conditions for exemption from military service are: 1.
If urethral fissure or stricture has been surgically corrected but still affects urinary function six months post-surgery; 2.
If urethral fissure or stricture is difficult to correct.
Those who have been treated without urinary difficulties are classified as Category B in the active reserve.

More Info

Hypospadias is a congenital condition in which the urethra does not open at the tip of the penis but rather on the underside. This condition can vary in severity, and its implications can extend beyond just the physical appearance or function of the penis.
1. Military Service Requirements: In many countries, including the United States, individuals with hypospadias may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis regarding their eligibility for military service. The military typically has specific medical standards that must be met, and conditions like hypospadias could potentially disqualify an individual depending on the severity of the condition and any associated complications. For instance, if the condition has been surgically corrected and does not impair urinary function or sexual function, the individual may be deemed fit for service. However, if there are significant complications, such as recurrent urinary tract infections or difficulties with sexual function, this could impact eligibility. The duration of service would generally be the same as for other recruits, assuming the individual is cleared for duty.

2. Impact on Testicular Size: Hypospadias itself does not directly affect testicular size. Testicular size is primarily determined by genetic and hormonal factors. However, there can be associated conditions that may influence testicular development. For example, some boys with hypospadias may also have undescended testicles (cryptorchidism), which can affect testicular size and function if not addressed. If the testicles do not descend properly, it can lead to complications such as infertility or an increased risk of testicular cancer later in life. Therefore, while hypospadias alone does not cause changes in testicular size, any associated conditions should be monitored and managed appropriately.

In summary, individuals with hypospadias may be eligible for military service, but their specific circumstances will be evaluated to determine fitness for duty. Additionally, while hypospadias does not directly affect testicular size, associated conditions may have implications for testicular health and development. It is essential for individuals with hypospadias to have regular follow-ups with a urologist to monitor their condition and address any potential complications.
