Postpartum issues
Hello Dr.
Lin, I apologize for asking two more questions:
1.
After giving birth to my second child, I have experienced significant changes in my body.
For instance, my menstrual period lasts about three days with heavy flow, then stops for two to three days, and suddenly I experience uncontrollable heavy bleeding again, lasting for a day before stopping, and this cycle continues for about 10 to 12 days.
I have consulted a gynecologist who mentioned that my uterine contractions are not functioning well.
This month, I took Western medicine for gynecological issues, which helped control the bleeding, but the problem returned the following month when I did not take the medication.
This situation is quite troubling for me!
2.
Every month when my period arrives, I tend to catch colds, both mild and severe, and it takes about half a month for the cold to resolve.
Could this be related to my condition? Would it be appropriate to consult a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner?

Dr. Lin Qingzhong reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dear Angel,
Hello! I apologize for the delay in my response due to a hacker intrusion into my email.
According to your message, you are experiencing menstrual irregularities, poor uterine contractions, and disharmony of the Chong and Ren meridians following childbirth, which has resulted in prolonged menstruation.
In my clinical practice, I frequently encounter similar cases, and I have observed good results with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment based on pulse diagnosis and syndrome differentiation.
Seeking TCM is a viable option.
Wishing you all the best.

Postpartum health issues can be quite complex, especially when it comes to menstrual irregularities and immune system responses. Your concerns regarding the changes in your menstrual cycle and the recurrent illnesses you experience are valid and warrant a thorough understanding.
1. Menstrual Irregularities Postpartum: After giving birth, many women experience significant changes in their menstrual cycles. This can include variations in flow, duration, and frequency. The symptoms you describe—heavy bleeding followed by periods of cessation—could be indicative of several factors. One possibility is that your uterus may not be contracting effectively, which can lead to prolonged bleeding. This is often referred to as uterine atony, and it can be more pronounced in women who have had multiple pregnancies. Hormonal fluctuations are another common cause of irregular menstrual cycles postpartum. The body takes time to readjust to its pre-pregnancy hormonal levels, and this can lead to erratic menstrual patterns.
If you have been prescribed medication to help regulate your menstrual cycle, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment. If the irregularities persist, further evaluation may be necessary. This could include blood tests to check hormone levels, an ultrasound to assess the uterus and ovaries, or other diagnostic procedures to rule out conditions such as fibroids or polyps.
2. Connection Between Menstrual Cycle and Immune Function: It is interesting to note that many women report an increase in susceptibility to infections, such as colds, around the time of their menstrual cycle. This phenomenon can be attributed to hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle, which can influence immune response. For instance, estrogen and progesterone can modulate immune function, potentially making some women more vulnerable to infections during certain phases of their cycle.
Your experience of frequent colds following your menstrual period could indeed be related to these hormonal fluctuations. Additionally, postpartum women often experience changes in their immune system due to the physical and emotional stresses of childbirth, which can further contribute to increased susceptibility to infections.
Regarding the question of whether seeing a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner is appropriate, many women find TCM helpful for managing menstrual irregularities and improving overall health. TCM approaches often focus on balancing the body's energy (Qi) and can include acupuncture, herbal remedies, and dietary recommendations. However, it is essential to consult with your primary healthcare provider before starting any new treatment, especially if you are currently taking medications.
In summary, postpartum health issues such as menstrual irregularities and immune responses are interconnected and can be influenced by hormonal changes, uterine health, and overall well-being. It is advisable to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, who can guide you through appropriate treatments and lifestyle adjustments to help manage your symptoms effectively. Regular follow-ups and possibly integrating TCM could provide a holistic approach to your postpartum recovery.
