Effective Treatments for Acne Scars: Do You Need Laser Surgery? - Dermatology

Maintenance

I purchased a product for acne scars, and I asked if it can treat pitted scars.
They said it requires long-term application; is that true? Do pitted scars necessarily need laser surgery for treatment? How much would such a treatment cost, and is surgery the only option? I live in Miaoli, but I want to know which hospitals in Taichung are better.
I would like to start treatment as soon as possible.
You also mentioned that people under 20 have more active sebaceous gland secretion.
Some say that acne should be extracted; otherwise, it will leave marks on the skin.
Is that correct? I have oily skin, and some people say I might have hormonal issues, which could be causing my acne and resulting in pitted scars...
I'm quite worried.

Dr. Huang Ruiyun reply Dermatology

It is impossible to completely eliminate acne scars.
After surgery for acne scars, the results can only be better than the original condition; they cannot be completely invisible or leave no trace.
The procedure is not easy, and it is advisable to first manage your acne to minimize the number of scars.
It would be better to wait a few years until your acne is less frequent before undergoing scar revision surgery.
Otherwise, the healing process may be complicated by new breakouts.
Avoid squeezing pimples.
The tendency to develop acne is often due to genetic factors.

More Info

When it comes to treating acne scars, particularly those that manifest as indentations or "pits" in the skin, there are several options available, including topical treatments, laser surgery, and other dermatological procedures. The effectiveness of these treatments can vary based on the severity of the scars, skin type, and individual response to treatment.

Topical treatments, such as retinoids (like Accutane), alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), can help improve skin texture and promote cell turnover. However, they often require consistent and long-term use to see significant results, especially for deeper scars. While these products can help with superficial scars and overall skin health, they may not be sufficient for more severe scarring.

Laser treatments, on the other hand, are often more effective for deeper acne scars. There are various types of laser treatments, including fractional laser therapy and ablative lasers, which work by removing layers of skin or stimulating collagen production. These procedures can lead to more immediate and noticeable improvements in skin texture and appearance. However, they do come with costs that can vary widely depending on the type of laser used, the number of sessions required, and the clinic's location. In general, laser treatments can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars.

It's important to note that not all acne scars require surgical intervention. Some may respond well to less invasive treatments, such as chemical peels or microneedling, which can also promote collagen production and improve skin texture. The choice of treatment should be based on a thorough evaluation by a dermatologist, who can assess the type and severity of your scars and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.

Regarding your concerns about acne and skin oiliness, it's true that individuals with oily skin may be more prone to acne due to excess sebum production. Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during adolescence or due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can exacerbate this issue. If you suspect that hormonal imbalances are contributing to your acne, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider who can evaluate your hormonal levels and suggest appropriate treatments.

As for the notion that acne should be "extracted" to prevent scarring, it's essential to approach this carefully. While some acne lesions can be safely extracted by a trained professional, attempting to pop or squeeze pimples on your own can lead to further inflammation, infection, and ultimately, more scarring. It's best to seek treatment from a dermatologist who can provide safe extraction methods and recommend a comprehensive skincare regimen tailored to your skin type.

In terms of finding a reputable clinic in Taichung, it would be advisable to look for dermatology clinics with good reviews and experienced practitioners. Many clinics offer consultations where you can discuss your concerns and explore treatment options. Given your urgency to address your acne scars, seeking a consultation soon would be beneficial.

In summary, while laser surgery is an effective option for treating acne scars, it is not the only solution. A combination of topical treatments, professional procedures, and lifestyle adjustments can also yield positive results. Consulting with a dermatologist will provide you with a personalized treatment plan that considers your specific skin type and concerns.
