~~~Skin Rejuvenation~~~
Hello Dr.
Cheng: I would like to undergo a chemical peel with alpha hydroxy acids, but I'm not sure what the procedure entails.
How long does the treatment take? Additionally, what kind of aftercare is required following the procedure? Lastly, how much does a single treatment cost? Thank you!
Wenzi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/04/21
Dr. Zheng Lizhen reply Dermatology
Hello: The process of chemical exfoliation with alpha hydroxy acids can be summarized as follows: makeup removal and cleansing → application of an alpha hydroxy acid formulation (selecting different concentrations based on individual needs) → leave on for a few minutes until the skin shows mild redness → rinse or neutralize → apply a cold compress → apply a repairing cream → sunscreen.
The main focus of post-treatment care is sun protection.
Our clinic charges NT$1500 per session.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Li-Chen, Dermatology.
More Info
Glycolic acid peels are a popular cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of the skin by exfoliating the outer layer. This treatment is particularly effective for addressing issues such as fine lines, uneven skin tone, acne scars, and sun damage. Here’s a comprehensive overview of the procedure, aftercare, and costs associated with glycolic acid peels.
Procedure
1. Consultation: Before undergoing a glycolic acid peel, it’s essential to have a consultation with a qualified dermatologist or licensed aesthetician. They will assess your skin type, discuss your concerns, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for the treatment.
2. Preparation: In preparation for the peel, you may be advised to avoid certain medications or products that can increase skin sensitivity, such as retinoids or exfoliating agents, for a few days prior to the procedure.
3. The Peel: During the procedure, the practitioner will cleanse your skin thoroughly. Then, a glycolic acid solution is applied to the skin using a brush or cotton pad. The concentration of glycolic acid can vary, typically ranging from 20% to 70%, depending on the desired depth of the peel and your skin's tolerance. The solution is left on the skin for a specific duration, usually between 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the strength of the peel and your skin's response.
4. Neutralization: After the designated time, the glycolic acid is neutralized with a specific solution or water, and the skin is cleansed again.
5. Post-Treatment: The skin may appear red and feel sensitive immediately after the peel, similar to a mild sunburn. This reaction is normal and typically subsides within a few hours to a couple of days.
Aftercare
Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure optimal results and minimize side effects:
1. Moisturization: Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. Look for products that are fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin.
2. Sun Protection: After a glycolic acid peel, your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight. It’s essential to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even on cloudy days, to protect your skin from UV damage.
3. Avoid Harsh Products: For at least a week post-peel, avoid using harsh skincare products, including exfoliants, retinoids, and products containing alcohol, as they can irritate the skin.
4. Limit Sun Exposure: Try to avoid direct sun exposure for a few days after the treatment. If you must be outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
5. Follow-Up: Depending on your skin's condition and the results you desire, your practitioner may recommend a series of peels spaced a few weeks apart.
Costs
The cost of glycolic acid peels can vary widely based on several factors, including:
- Location: Prices can differ significantly depending on the geographic area and the clinic's reputation.
- Practitioner: Treatments performed by experienced dermatologists or licensed professionals may be more expensive than those done by less experienced practitioners.
- Strength of Peel: Higher concentrations of glycolic acid or more extensive treatments may cost more.
On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $75 to $300 per session. If you opt for a series of treatments, some clinics may offer package deals that can reduce the overall cost.
Conclusion
Glycolic acid peels can be an effective way to rejuvenate the skin and address various skin concerns. Understanding the procedure, proper aftercare, and associated costs can help you make an informed decision. Always consult with a qualified professional to tailor the treatment to your specific skin needs and ensure safety throughout the process.
