I have developed a strange growth?
Hello Doctor: Today I noticed a lump near my groin, close to the inner thigh, about the size of a peanut.
It feels soft to the touch but is painful, somewhat similar to a pimple but larger.
I'm not sure what it could be.

When it comes to painful growths near the groin area, particularly those that feel soft and are about the size of a peanut, there are several potential causes to consider. It’s important to approach this situation with caution, as various conditions can present with similar symptoms. Here are some possibilities:
1. Lymphadenopathy: One of the most common causes of a painful lump in the groin area is swollen lymph nodes. Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to infections, inflammation, or other underlying conditions. If the lump is soft and tender, it could be a lymph node reacting to an infection in the body, such as a skin infection or a sexually transmitted infection.
2. Sebaceous Cyst: These are non-cancerous lumps that can occur when a sebaceous gland becomes blocked. They are typically soft, movable, and can sometimes become inflamed or infected, leading to pain. If the cyst becomes infected, it may require drainage or antibiotics.
3. Hernia: Inguinal hernias occur when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. This can cause a noticeable lump in the groin area, which may be painful, especially when straining or lifting. Hernias often require surgical intervention.
4. Folliculitis or Abscess: If the lump resembles a pimple but is larger, it could be an inflamed hair follicle (folliculitis) or an abscess, which is a collection of pus that can form due to infection. These conditions can be painful and may require drainage or antibiotics.
5. Lipoma: A lipoma is a benign tumor made of fat tissue. They are generally soft, movable, and painless, but if they press on nearby structures, they can cause discomfort.
6. Other Conditions: There are other less common causes, such as tumors (benign or malignant), or conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa, which can cause painful lumps in the groin area.
Given the variety of potential causes, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis. A thorough physical examination, along with a detailed medical history, will help determine the nature of the growth. In some cases, imaging studies like an ultrasound or CT scan may be necessary to provide more information.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
- Avoid squeezing or picking at the lump, as this can lead to infection or further irritation.
- Monitor for additional symptoms, such as fever, increased redness or swelling, or changes in the lump’s size or shape.
- Keep the area clean and dry to prevent infection.
If the lump persists, increases in size, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and ensure appropriate care.
