Dear Doctor, I have two questions?
Dear Doctor, I have two questions...
1.
Currently, the left side of my glans is irregularly red, while the rest appears normal in skin color.
I would like to ask what this could be.
I visited a sexually transmitted disease prevention clinic, and both doctors said, "It's balanitis; just apply some medication, and it will be fine." I self-paid for a seven-day course of antibiotics.
During my first visit, there were only a few small red spots, not very noticeable! However, after fourteen days of taking the antibiotics and using two different topical ointments (the first one was ineffective, so I switched to the second), I developed the symptoms I mentioned above! Currently, I am using a cream called Picatin, but I feel it is not helping.
Could you please provide some clarification?
2.
I have shown my genital area to both doctors and family members, and they all said it appears a bit small.
Therefore, I would like to ask if, since I might still be in my puberty phase, there are any medications or other options available that could help with growth.
Thank you.

Dr. Lai Ronghao reply Urology
1.
It could be balanitis or eczema, and it is best to have the same physician manage the treatment to assess the overall progress of the condition.
2.
You should consider getting another examination to see if there are any issues or possible remedies.

Dear Patient,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding penile health and growth. It’s important to address these issues with sensitivity and a clear understanding of the underlying medical principles.
1. Concerns About the Redness on the Glans
From your description, it seems you are experiencing a condition that has been diagnosed as balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis). The redness and irregular appearance you mentioned could be due to several factors, including infections (bacterial or fungal), irritants, or even allergic reactions. The fact that you have been prescribed antibiotics and topical treatments indicates that your healthcare providers suspect an infectious cause.
However, if you have not seen improvement after two weeks of treatment, it may be time to consider a few possibilities:
- Re-evaluation: Sometimes, the initial diagnosis may not fully capture the issue. It would be prudent to seek a second opinion from a urologist, who specializes in male reproductive health. They can conduct a thorough examination and possibly perform tests to rule out other conditions, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or skin disorders.
- Hygiene Practices: Maintaining proper hygiene is crucial. Ensure that you are gently cleaning the area with mild soap and water, and avoiding harsh soaps or irritants that could exacerbate the condition.
- Follow-Up on Treatment: If the current medication is not effective, it’s essential to communicate this to your healthcare provider. They may need to adjust your treatment plan or explore alternative diagnoses.
2. Concerns About Size and Growth
Regarding your concerns about penile size, it’s important to understand that penis size varies significantly among individuals and is influenced by genetic factors. During puberty, which can last into the late teens, many boys experience growth in various aspects of their bodies, including the penis. However, it’s also common for individuals to feel self-conscious about their size, especially during adolescence.
- Growth Expectations: If you are still in your teenage years, there is a possibility that you may continue to grow. The average age for boys to reach their full adult size is around 16 to 18 years, but this can vary.
- Medical Interventions: Currently, there are no medically approved medications or treatments that can significantly increase penile size. Many products marketed for this purpose are not scientifically validated and can even be harmful. It’s essential to approach this topic with caution and skepticism regarding any claims made by such products.
- Self-Acceptance: It may be beneficial to focus on self-acceptance and understanding that size does not determine one’s worth or ability to have fulfilling relationships. If feelings of inadequacy persist, speaking with a mental health professional can provide support and coping strategies.
Conclusion
In summary, I recommend seeking a second opinion from a urologist regarding the inflammation of your glans, especially since the current treatment has not yielded results. For concerns about size, remember that growth can still occur, and focusing on self-acceptance is key. If you have further questions or need support, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional.
Take care of your health, and remember that you are not alone in facing these concerns.
