Abnormal growths in the armpit?
Hello, doctor! Recently, I noticed pain in my armpit and after checking, I found two raised lumps.
I initially thought they were pimples, as I have had pimples in my armpit before, but this time it feels different—hard and painful.
When I raise my arm, the lumps are very noticeable.
What could this be? Should I see a doctor? Thank you!

You should see a doctor; it may be an inflammation of the axillary glands, which sometimes requires antibiotic treatment or even surgical removal to prevent recurrence.
Wishing you well.

When you notice unusual bumps in your underarm area, especially if they are hard, painful, and have a different texture than typical acne, it’s essential to consider several potential causes. The underarm region is rich in lymph nodes, sweat glands, and hair follicles, which can lead to various conditions that may present as lumps or bumps.
One common cause of painful lumps in the underarm is lymphadenopathy, which refers to the swelling of lymph nodes. This can occur due to infections, such as bacterial or viral infections, or even localized skin infections like folliculitis or abscesses. The lymph nodes in the underarm can swell in response to infections in the arm, breast, or even systemic infections. If you have recently had an illness or infection, this could explain the swelling.
Another possibility is the development of cysts, such as sebaceous cysts, which can occur when a hair follicle becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells. These cysts can become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and tenderness.
Additionally, hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin condition that can cause painful lumps in areas where skin rubs together, including the underarms. This condition is characterized by the formation of painful lumps, abscesses, and sometimes scarring.
In some cases, the bumps could be related to a more serious condition, such as a tumor or an abnormal growth. While most lumps in the underarm are benign, it is crucial to have any new or unusual lumps evaluated by a healthcare professional, especially if they are painful, persistent, or changing in size.
Given your description of the bumps being hard and painful, it would be advisable to see a doctor. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies or a biopsy if necessary to determine the exact nature of the lumps. Early evaluation is essential, especially if there is any concern about infection or other underlying conditions.
In summary, while there are several benign explanations for the lumps you are experiencing, it is always best to err on the side of caution. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with peace of mind and ensure that any necessary treatment is initiated promptly. Remember, timely intervention can prevent complications and lead to better outcomes.
