Penile issues
Hello, doctor.
I had intercourse three to four times on Sunday over the weekend, and two days later, I noticed a raised bump near the base of my penis.
It is about the size of a pimple, red in color, and feels slightly painful when touched.
I'm not sure what it could be.
John, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/05/04
Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
John: Based on your description, I can only guess that it is likely a skin inflammation.
The possible factors could be inadequate local skin hygiene, leading to blockage and subsequent bacterial infection.
I recommend local cleaning and, if necessary, the use of some ointments.

More Info
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the painful bump on your penis. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a condition that could be related to several potential causes. I will outline some of the most common possibilities and suggest some steps you can take to address the issue.
1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur in the genital area. It often presents as small red bumps that may be painful or itchy. Folliculitis can be caused by bacterial infections, irritation from shaving, or friction from clothing or sexual activity.
2. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that can appear around the corona of the penis. They are not painful and do not require treatment, but they can sometimes be mistaken for other conditions.
3. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), genital warts can appear as small, flesh-colored or red bumps. They can be itchy or painful and may require treatment from a healthcare provider.
4. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV): If the bump is accompanied by blisters or sores, it could be a sign of genital herpes. This viral infection can cause painful lesions and requires medical evaluation for diagnosis and management.
5. Cysts or Abscesses: Sometimes, sebaceous cysts or abscesses can form in the genital area, leading to painful lumps. These may require drainage or other medical intervention.
6. Other Infections: Conditions such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can also cause bumps or lesions on the penis.
What to Do Next:
- Avoid Irritation: Refrain from any sexual activity until you have a better understanding of what the bump is. This will help prevent further irritation or potential spread of an infection.
- Keep the Area Clean: Gently wash the area with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that could irritate the skin.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the bump for any changes. If it becomes larger, more painful, or if you develop additional symptoms (such as fever, discharge, or widespread rash), seek medical attention promptly.
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: It is essential to see a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, take a sample for testing to determine the exact cause of the bump.
- Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it is tempting to search for answers online, self-diagnosing can lead to unnecessary anxiety or inappropriate treatment. A healthcare provider can offer the most accurate information and treatment options.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relief:
If the bump is causing significant discomfort, you may consider taking over-the-counter pain relief medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, but consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
In conclusion, while there are several potential causes for the bump you are experiencing, it is crucial to seek medical advice for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure your overall health and well-being.
Take care, and I hope you find relief soon.
