Menstrual irregularities
Hello, Doctor.
My menstrual cycle started on April 28, which is about a week later than usual (my typical cycle is around 30 days).
At first, everything was normal, and I didn't experience any menstrual cramps.
However, starting from the fourth day of my period, the flow became very light and continued as brownish discharge until May 9, when the flow suddenly increased again.
On that day, I also experienced lower back pain, but it only occurred that day.
Over the past two days, the flow has started to decrease again, and today there is only a small amount of light brown discharge left.
In total, my menstrual period has lasted about two weeks.
I would like to ask, Doctor, is this simply a change in my menstrual cycle due to stress, or could there be another underlying issue? I appreciate your help in clarifying this.
Thank you.

This includes blood tests, abdominal ultrasound, and vaginal examination.
It is advisable to visit a qualified gynecology clinic for assessment.

Irregular menstrual cycles can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding the underlying causes is essential for addressing any potential health issues. Based on your description, it seems that your menstrual cycle has experienced some notable changes, including a delayed onset, variations in flow, and the presence of brown discharge. Let's explore the possible causes and concerns related to these changes.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, lifestyle changes, and underlying medical conditions. Stress is a common factor that can lead to irregularities in the menstrual cycle. When the body experiences stress, it can affect the hypothalamus, which plays a crucial role in regulating hormones that control the menstrual cycle. This disruption can result in delayed periods, lighter flow, or even missed periods altogether.
In your case, the delay of about a week followed by a lighter flow and the presence of brown discharge may suggest that your body is responding to stress or other external factors. Brown discharge often indicates older blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus, which can occur at the end of a menstrual period. However, the fact that your menstrual cycle has extended to about two weeks is worth noting.
Other potential causes of irregular menstrual cycles include:
1. Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can lead to irregularities in menstrual cycles. Hormonal imbalances can affect ovulation and the regularity of periods.
2. Changes in Weight or Diet: Significant weight loss or gain, as well as changes in diet, can impact hormonal levels and menstrual regularity.
3. Physical Activity: Intense exercise or changes in physical activity levels can also affect menstrual cycles. Athletes, for instance, may experience irregular periods due to low body fat and energy availability.
4. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as endometriosis or uterine fibroids, can lead to changes in menstrual flow and cycle length.
5. Medications: Some medications, including hormonal contraceptives, can alter menstrual patterns. If you have recently started or stopped any medications, this could be a contributing factor.
Given your symptoms, it would be prudent to monitor your cycle over the next few months. If you continue to experience irregularities, or if you have additional symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning signs, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend blood tests to check hormone levels, imaging studies, or other evaluations to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while stress could certainly be a contributing factor to your irregular menstrual cycle, it is essential to consider other potential causes as well. Keeping a menstrual diary to track your cycles, symptoms, and any lifestyle changes can provide valuable information for you and your healthcare provider. If your symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is the best course of action to ensure your reproductive health is properly managed.
