Skin allergy ~ itching
Red, bumpy rashes resembling chicken skin have appeared on my hands.
They are itchy and swell when scratched.
The rashes are only present on both hands, with the most severe area being around the elbows.
I usually do not have allergic reactions to seafood, but I am allergic to alcohol.
I have eaten seafood in the past two days but did not consume any alcohol.
I am unsure why this is happening and if there are other symptoms that could help determine the cause.
Additionally, can I soak in hot springs if I have skin allergies? Thank you, doctor, for taking the time to answer.

If the rash disappears within 24 hours, it is likely urticaria (hives).
Many foods and medications can trigger this condition, and sometimes it is necessary to keep a long-term record of the relationship between diet and the rash.
When experiencing skin allergies, it is best to avoid washing with very hot water.
Wishing you well.

More Info
When it comes to skin allergies, particularly the appearance of red bumps and itching on the hands, there are several potential causes and considerations to keep in mind. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a form of contact dermatitis or an allergic reaction. The fact that the bumps are itchy and swell when scratched suggests an inflammatory response, which is common in allergic reactions.
Possible Causes:
1. Contact Dermatitis: This is a common skin condition that occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritant or allergen. Given that you mentioned the bumps are primarily on your hands and particularly severe around the elbows, it could be that you have come into contact with something that your skin is sensitive to. This could include soaps, detergents, or even materials from clothing.
2. Food Allergies: While you noted that you typically do not have a reaction to seafood, it is possible to develop new allergies over time. If you consumed seafood recently, it could be worth considering whether this could be a trigger, even if you have not experienced reactions in the past.
3. Environmental Factors: Changes in the environment, such as exposure to pollen, dust, or other allergens, can also lead to skin reactions. If you have been in a new environment or have had increased exposure to potential allergens, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema): If you have a history of eczema or dry skin, this could also explain the symptoms. Eczema can flare up due to various triggers, including stress, weather changes, or irritants.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
To accurately diagnose the condition, it is advisable to consult with a dermatologist. They may perform a physical examination and could recommend patch testing to identify specific allergens. In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
- Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting to scratch the itchy areas, doing so can worsen the inflammation and lead to secondary infections.
- Moisturize: Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to help soothe the skin and maintain hydration.
- Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can help reduce inflammation and itching. However, if the condition persists or worsens, prescription-strength treatments may be necessary.
- Antihistamines: Oral antihistamines can help alleviate itching and reduce allergic responses.
Regarding Hot Springs:
As for your question about bathing in hot springs, it is generally advisable to be cautious. Hot springs can sometimes exacerbate skin conditions, especially if the water contains irritants or allergens. If your skin is currently inflamed or broken, exposure to hot water and minerals may lead to further irritation or infection. It would be best to consult with your dermatologist regarding this activity, especially if you are experiencing a flare-up.
In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing could be indicative of a skin allergy or contact dermatitis, a professional evaluation is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan. Keeping track of any new products you use or changes in your environment can also provide helpful information for your healthcare provider.
