Abnormal Vaginal Discharge: What Your Girlfriend Might Be Experiencing - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Doctor, I have a question?

Hello Doctor: Recently, my girlfriend has been experiencing dark brown vaginal discharge since May 16 (the first two days it was clear and white).
It resembles blood but has no metallic smell.
She also feels a dull pain in her abdomen, and her menstrual period (due on June 4) has not arrived yet.
She has been dieting (eating very little).
I would like to ask the doctor what might be happening.
Previously (on May 14 and 15), I had manually stimulated her vagina; could this have caused a rupture of the hymen?

btovd, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/05/22

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Recent dieting may cause hormonal imbalances, leading to irregular vaginal bleeding.
Sincerely, Lu Li-Cheng.

Understanding abnormal vaginal discharge can be concerning, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain. In the case of your girlfriend, the deep brown discharge she has been experiencing since May 16, along with the initial clear discharge, could indicate several possibilities.

Firstly, the color and consistency of vaginal discharge can vary significantly throughout the menstrual cycle. Brown discharge often signifies old blood that is being expelled from the body, which can occur at the beginning or end of a menstrual period. However, since your girlfriend's last menstrual cycle began on June 4 and she has not yet had her period, this brown discharge could be a sign of irregular bleeding, which may be influenced by various factors.

One significant factor to consider is her recent dieting. Extreme changes in diet or significant weight loss can lead to hormonal imbalances, which may disrupt the regular menstrual cycle and cause irregular bleeding or discharge. Hormonal fluctuations can also lead to symptoms such as abdominal discomfort or cramping, which your girlfriend is experiencing.
Regarding the concern about the hymen and whether manual stimulation could have caused a rupture, it is important to note that not all individuals with a hymen will experience bleeding or pain if it is stretched or torn. The hymen can vary greatly in elasticity and thickness, and many individuals may not even notice any physical changes or discomfort from such activities. Therefore, while it is possible that manual stimulation could cause some minor trauma, it is unlikely to be the sole cause of the symptoms she is experiencing.

Additionally, the presence of abdominal pain alongside abnormal discharge warrants further investigation. Conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, or even ovarian cysts can cause similar symptoms. It is crucial for her to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough examination and appropriate testing to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, your girlfriend's symptoms could be attributed to hormonal imbalances due to dieting, potential minor trauma from manual stimulation, or other gynecological issues. It is essential for her to seek medical attention to obtain a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Encouraging her to visit a healthcare professional will not only provide peace of mind but also ensure that any potential health issues are addressed promptly.
