Issues with bowel movements and frequent urination during pregnancy?
Dear Dr.
Lu,
1.
I am currently 14 weeks and 6 days pregnant.
Before and in the early stages of my pregnancy, I often experienced constipation.
Recently, over the past month, I have noticed that my stools have become very soft or are in the form of thin, soft strands at the regular times I need to go.
They often come out along with gas, and the amount seems to be okay.
When I feel the urge to go, I experience slight abdominal pain, but it resolves after I have a bowel movement (this pain has been present before; it only occurs during bowel movements and not at other times).
However, it does not feel like diarrhea, as it is not watery and there is always stool.
I do not feel the urge to go throughout the day, only in the morning.
Is this considered abnormal?
2.
Frequent urination during pregnancy is normal.
I often feel the urge to urinate suddenly, but I do not pass much urine.
There is no pain or discomfort, just a persistent urge to urinate.
I am unsure what constitutes abnormal, so is this also considered normal?
Thank you, Dr.
Lu.

Currently, I am 14 weeks and 6 days pregnant.
Before and in the early stages of my pregnancy, I often experienced constipation; if I wasn't constipated, my bowel movements were quite normal.
However, over the past month, I've noticed that my stools have become very soft or are consistently in thin, soft strands at the regular times I need to go.
They often come out along with gas, and the amount seems to be okay.
When I need to go, I feel a slight pain in my abdomen, but it goes away afterward (the pain has been like this before; it only occurs when I need to go, and I don't feel pain at other times).
However, this isn't diarrhea, as it doesn't feel like watery stools; there is always stool present.
I don't feel the urge to go all day, just in the morning.
Is this considered abnormal?
Answer: This is not considered abnormal.
Frequent urination during pregnancy is normal.
I often feel the urge to go but don't pass much.
It doesn't hurt, and I don't feel uncomfortable; sometimes, I just have the urge to urinate.
I'm unsure what would be considered abnormal.
Is this also normal?
Answer: This is also considered normal.

During pregnancy, many women experience various gastrointestinal and urinary changes due to hormonal fluctuations and physical changes in the body. Your concerns about constipation and frequent urination are common, and I will address both issues in detail.
Understanding Constipation During Pregnancy
1. Changes in Bowel Movements: It’s not unusual for women to experience changes in bowel habits during pregnancy. The soft, thin stools you describe could be attributed to several factors, including hormonal changes that affect the gastrointestinal tract. Progesterone, a hormone that increases during pregnancy, can relax the muscles of the intestines, leading to slower digestion and sometimes constipation. However, in your case, it seems you are experiencing softer stools rather than constipation, which may indicate a change in your diet, hydration levels, or even stress.
2. Normal vs. Abnormal: The symptoms you describe—soft stools that are sometimes accompanied by gas and mild abdominal discomfort—do not necessarily indicate a serious problem. As long as you are not experiencing severe pain, blood in your stool, or significant changes in your bowel habits (like diarrhea), this can be considered a normal variation during pregnancy. However, if you notice any alarming symptoms or if the changes persist, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider.
3. Dietary Considerations: To manage your bowel health, consider maintaining a balanced diet rich in fiber, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Staying hydrated is also crucial, as it helps soften stools and promotes regular bowel movements. If you find that your symptoms worsen, you might want to discuss safe options for stool softeners or dietary adjustments with your doctor.
Understanding Frequent Urination During Pregnancy
1. Normal Frequency: Frequent urination is a common symptom during pregnancy, especially in the first and third trimesters. In the early stages, hormonal changes and increased blood flow to the kidneys can lead to more frequent urination. As the pregnancy progresses, the growing uterus exerts pressure on the bladder, which can also contribute to the sensation of needing to urinate more often.
2. Characteristics of Normal Urination: You mentioned that you feel the urge to urinate frequently but do not experience pain or discomfort. This is generally considered normal. The amount of urine produced can vary, and it’s not uncommon for pregnant women to feel the need to urinate even if they do not produce a large volume of urine each time.
3. When to Seek Help: While frequent urination is typically normal, you should consult your healthcare provider if you experience any of the following:
- Pain or burning sensation during urination
- Blood in your urine
- Inability to control urination
- Significant changes in the color or odor of your urine
Conclusion
In summary, the changes you are experiencing with bowel movements and urination are common during pregnancy and can often be attributed to hormonal changes and physical pressures from the growing uterus. Maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and monitoring your symptoms can help manage these issues. However, always feel free to reach out to your healthcare provider if you have concerns or if your symptoms change significantly. They can provide personalized advice and reassurance tailored to your specific situation. Remember, every pregnancy is unique, and your comfort and health are paramount.
