How to treat psychosomatic disorders?
Hello, doctor.
I have seen your responses to patients' questions on other websites, and I believe you are a very caring and dedicated physician.
Thank you for your efforts on behalf of patients.
I would like to ask you how to treat psychosomatic disorders.
I used to work under a very intimidating supervisor, and since then, I have become easily anxious.
Although I have improved somewhat, the symptoms persist, including palpitations, gastrointestinal discomfort, and various body pains (such as headaches or unexplained bodily aches).
Recently, I have even experienced joint pain (in my fingers, elbows, etc.).
About two years ago, I visited Mackay Memorial Hospital, but the doctor saw over 100 patients in one morning and only advised me to relax and prescribed some medication.
Of course, we know we need to relax, but the problem is not knowing how to do it.
Additionally, sometimes I feel fine and relaxed, yet my body still feels uncomfortable, and I can be easily anxious and worried (I don't know how to control this anxiety).
Therefore, I would like to ask you if there are any methods to treat psychosomatic disorders.
Is it necessary to identify the root of the psychological issues for a potential cure? Also, could you please recommend suitable treatment facilities in the northern region? I would greatly appreciate your guidance.

Dr. Tang Xinbei reply Psychiatry
Dear friend: First of all, thank you for your encouragement.
I hope to do my best to contribute to others and society.
As long as time permits, I will answer the questions from online users as thoroughly as possible.
Through addressing these questions, I can also motivate myself to read more books or review more materials, which is a mutually beneficial learning experience.
Perhaps it is due to the shortage of medical professionals that there are many people in need, and doctors do not have enough time to respond, leaving patients to rely on medication for long-term management of their issues.
I believe many people wish to take control of their health with their own efforts and seek quick solutions, which leads many to try various home remedies, folk treatments, or alternative therapies.
Regarding your concerns, it may be "Generalized Anxiety Disorder," while psychosomatic disorders are a broader category.
Traditional views suggest a close relationship with individual personality and life stress, while current perspectives emphasize a strong physiological basis, with psychological factors being key triggers for the condition.
In terms of treatment, pharmacotherapy can effectively manage physiological factors, but addressing the root causes of psychological issues can help adjust personality traits and improve coping mechanisms and emotional regulation in response to life stress.
Psychotherapy and hypnosis are viable options.
Currently, there are "biofeedback" therapies available, where therapists can teach relaxation techniques.
I recommend you visit nearby hospitals such as Taipei Medical University Hospital, National Taiwan University Hospital, or Tri-Service General Hospital, where such services should be available! Wishing you peace and joy!

More Info
Psychosomatic disorders, often characterized by physical symptoms that arise from psychological factors, can be particularly challenging to treat. These conditions manifest as real physical ailments, such as headaches, gastrointestinal issues, and chronic pain, but their origins are deeply rooted in emotional and psychological distress. Understanding and addressing these underlying issues is crucial for effective treatment.
Understanding Psychosomatic Disorders
Psychosomatic disorders occur when psychological factors significantly influence physical health. Stress, anxiety, and trauma can lead to various symptoms, including heart palpitations, gastrointestinal discomfort, and generalized pain. Your experience of working under a terrifying supervisor may have triggered a stress response that continues to affect your physical health even after the stressful situation has ended. This is not uncommon; many individuals find that their bodies react to stress in ways that can be debilitating.
Treatment Approaches
1. Psychotherapy: Engaging in therapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), can be highly beneficial. CBT helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to their symptoms. It can also provide coping strategies for managing stress and anxiety.
2. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation, yoga, or deep-breathing exercises, can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. These techniques encourage individuals to focus on the present moment, which can alleviate anxiety and improve overall well-being.
3. Physical Activity: Regular exercise is a powerful tool for managing stress and improving physical health. It releases endorphins, which can enhance mood and reduce feelings of anxiety. Finding an enjoyable form of exercise can make it easier to incorporate into your routine.
4. Medication: In some cases, medication may be prescribed to help manage symptoms of anxiety or depression that contribute to psychosomatic disorders. Antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications can be effective, but they should be used in conjunction with therapy for the best results.
5. Education and Support: Understanding your condition and connecting with support groups can provide additional resources and encouragement. Learning about psychosomatic disorders can empower you to take an active role in your treatment.
6. Holistic Approaches: Some individuals find relief through alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, or massage therapy. These treatments can help alleviate physical symptoms and promote relaxation.
Finding the Right Treatment Facility
When seeking treatment, it's essential to find a facility that specializes in psychosomatic disorders or has a comprehensive approach to mental health. Look for clinics that offer integrated care, combining psychological and physical health services. In northern Taiwan, you might consider institutions like:
- Taipei Medical University Hospital: Known for its holistic approach to health, they provide various mental health services.
- National Taiwan University Hospital: Offers a wide range of psychiatric services and has a reputation for quality care.
- Taipei Veterans General Hospital: Provides comprehensive mental health services, including psychotherapy and medication management.
Conclusion
Addressing psychosomatic disorders requires a multifaceted approach that considers both the psychological and physical aspects of health. It’s essential to work closely with healthcare professionals who understand the complexities of these disorders. Finding the right therapist or treatment facility can make a significant difference in your recovery journey. Remember, healing is a process, and it’s okay to seek help and take the time you need to feel better.
