Red spots on the skin?

Red spots often appear on my arms unexpectedly, and over time they turn dark and remain under the skin.
I'm not sure what they are, and they don't appear in a regular pattern; sometimes I notice a few after one or two months, while other times I may not see any for nearly a year.

ERIC, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/06/09

Dr. Huang Ruiyun reply Dermatology

If there are only a few spots that are less than 1mm in size and change from red to brown, and they are likely to resolve on their own, there is no need to be concerned about them.

Unexplained red spots on the skin can be concerning, especially when they change color or texture over time. The appearance of red spots that later turn dark can be attributed to several factors, and understanding these can help in managing the condition effectively.

Firstly, it's essential to consider the potential causes of these red spots. They may be related to various dermatological conditions, including:
1. Petechiae: These are small, pinpoint red spots that can appear due to bleeding under the skin. They may not be associated with any pain or itching and can occur due to various reasons, including physical strain, certain medications, or underlying health conditions.

2. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to food, medications, or environmental factors can lead to the sudden appearance of red spots. These spots may be itchy or inflamed and can vary in size and shape.

3. Dermatitis: Conditions such as contact dermatitis or eczema can cause red spots that may become darker over time. These are often associated with itching and can be triggered by irritants or allergens.

4. Insect Bites: Bites from insects can cause localized redness and swelling. If scratched, these areas can become darker as they heal.

5. Vascular Lesions: Conditions like cherry angiomas or spider veins can appear as red spots on the skin. These are usually benign but can change in appearance over time.

6. Skin Infections: Bacterial or viral infections can lead to red spots or rashes. If accompanied by other symptoms like fever or pain, medical attention is necessary.

7. Hyperpigmentation: After inflammation or injury to the skin, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur, leading to dark spots. This is common in individuals with darker skin tones.

Given the sporadic nature of your symptoms, it might be beneficial to keep a diary of when these spots appear, any associated activities, dietary changes, or potential allergens. This information can be helpful for a healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.

As for treatment options, here are some suggestions:
- Topical Treatments: Depending on the underlying cause, topical corticosteroids or antihistamines may help reduce inflammation and itching. However, these should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

- Moisturizers: Keeping the skin well-hydrated can help improve its barrier function and may reduce the occurrence of red spots, especially if they are related to dryness or dermatitis.

- Avoiding Irritants: Identifying and avoiding potential irritants or allergens can help prevent the recurrence of red spots.

- Sun Protection: Using sunscreen can prevent further darkening of any hyperpigmented areas and protect the skin from UV damage.

- Consultation with a Dermatologist: If the spots persist, change in appearance, or are accompanied by other symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical advice. A dermatologist can provide a thorough examination and may recommend treatments such as laser therapy for hyperpigmentation or other dermatological interventions.

In conclusion, while the appearance of unexplained red spots on the skin can be alarming, understanding the potential causes and treatment options can help manage the condition effectively. Keeping track of any changes and consulting with a healthcare professional will provide the best course of action for your skin health.
