Male pattern baldness or hereditary hair loss?
Hello Doctor: I started experiencing hair loss in middle school.
The situation is that I noticed a patch of hair loss, and I can easily pull out a lot of hair without any pain.
I'm not sure if it's due to stress, washing my hair every two to three days, or not washing my hair after getting caught in the rain.
Since I turned 20, my hair loss has continued, and now the right side of my head is starting to bald, with localized alopecia and accelerated thinning.
I would like to know if there are any oral medications available in Taiwan.
What topical treatments are available? Are they covered by health insurance?

More Info
Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is a common condition that affects a significant number of men as they age. It is characterized by a progressive thinning of hair, often starting at the temples and crown of the head. Understanding the causes, available treatments, and options for managing this condition can help individuals make informed decisions about their hair loss.
Causes of Male Pattern Baldness
The primary cause of male pattern baldness is genetic predisposition. If you have a family history of hair loss, particularly on your mother's side, you may be more likely to experience it yourself. The condition is also influenced by hormones, particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a derivative of testosterone. DHT binds to hair follicles, causing them to shrink and produce thinner hair over time. This process can lead to the eventual cessation of hair production in affected follicles.
Other factors that may contribute to hair loss include:
1. Stress: While stress alone is not a direct cause of male pattern baldness, it can exacerbate hair loss in those already predisposed to it.
2. Nutritional Deficiencies: Lack of essential nutrients, such as iron, zinc, and vitamins, can affect hair health.
3. Medical Conditions: Certain conditions, such as thyroid disorders or autoimmune diseases, can also lead to hair loss.
4. Medications: Some medications, including those for blood pressure, depression, and cancer treatments, can have hair loss as a side effect.
Treatments for Male Pattern Baldness
There are several treatment options available for male pattern baldness, which can be broadly categorized into topical treatments, oral medications, and surgical options.
1. Topical Treatments:
- Minoxidil (Rogaine): This over-the-counter topical solution is applied directly to the scalp. It can help stimulate hair growth and slow down hair loss. It is most effective in individuals who are just starting to lose their hair.
- Finasteride (Propecia): While primarily an oral medication, it is worth mentioning here as it is often used in conjunction with topical treatments. Finasteride works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to DHT, thereby reducing hair loss.
2. Oral Medications:
- Finasteride: As mentioned, this prescription medication can be effective in slowing hair loss and promoting regrowth. It is important to discuss potential side effects, including sexual dysfunction, with your healthcare provider.
3. Surgical Options:
- Hair Transplant Surgery: This involves moving hair follicles from a donor site (usually the back of the head) to the balding areas. It can provide a permanent solution to hair loss but is more invasive and costly.
Considerations for Treatment
When considering treatment for male pattern baldness, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider or a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss. They can help determine the most appropriate treatment based on the severity of hair loss, individual health factors, and personal preferences.
Regarding insurance coverage, it varies by plan. Some insurance policies may cover certain treatments, while others may not. It is advisable to check with your insurance provider to understand what is covered.
Conclusion
Male pattern baldness is a common condition that can be distressing for many men. Understanding its causes and available treatments can empower individuals to take proactive steps in managing their hair loss. Whether through topical treatments, oral medications, or surgical options, there are various avenues to explore. Consulting with a healthcare professional is crucial to developing a tailored approach that considers individual circumstances and preferences.
