I have a question?

Hello Doctor: I am 19 years old and have never engaged in sexual intercourse, but I have been masturbating since the 8th grade, almost every day.
Recently, I have noticed that my gastrointestinal health seems to have worsened since I started masturbating.
I usually masturbate by pressing my penis against the bed while lying on my stomach.
I'm not sure if this could cause any issues.
Sometimes I masturbate 3 to 4 times a day.
Is this a problem? Can masturbation lead to sexually transmitted infections? Since I haven't had sexual intercourse, I assume I can't contract HIV, right?

eric, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/06/12

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Eric: At the age of 19, having multiple erections in a day is considered normal as long as there are no physical discomforts.
Erections involve the coordination of the autonomic nervous system, and excessive excitement can indeed affect the gastrointestinal system.
Some individuals may experience constipation or diarrhea after multiple ejaculations, which is related to autonomic nervous system issues.
There is no need to worry too much; engaging in self-stimulation does not lead to sexually transmitted infections.

Masturbation is a common behavior among adolescents and young adults, and it is generally considered a normal part of sexual development. At 19 years old, engaging in masturbation is not unusual, and many people do it for various reasons, including sexual pleasure, stress relief, and exploration of their own bodies. However, your concerns about the frequency of your masturbation and its potential effects on your health are valid and deserve attention.

Firstly, it is important to understand that masturbation itself is not inherently harmful. In fact, it can have several health benefits, such as reducing stress, improving sleep, and helping individuals learn about their sexual preferences and responses. However, excessive masturbation—defined as engaging in the behavior to the point where it interferes with daily life, responsibilities, or relationships—can lead to negative physical and psychological effects.

You mentioned that you masturbate almost daily and sometimes multiple times a day. While this frequency is not uncommon, it is essential to consider how it affects your overall well-being. If you are experiencing gastrointestinal issues, such as changes in bowel habits or discomfort, it may not be directly related to masturbation itself but could be influenced by other factors, such as diet, stress, or anxiety. The physical position you described—pressing your penis against the bed—should not cause gastrointestinal problems, but if you are experiencing discomfort, it might be worth exploring different positions or techniques that are more comfortable for you.

Regarding your concerns about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV, it is important to note that masturbation alone does not transmit these infections. STIs are typically spread through sexual contact with an infected partner. Since you mentioned that you have not engaged in sexual intercourse, your risk of contracting HIV or other STIs through masturbation is negligible. However, if you were to engage in sexual activities in the future, practicing safe sex—such as using condoms—would be crucial in reducing the risk of STIs.

If you find that your masturbation habits are causing distress or interfering with your daily life, it may be helpful to reflect on the reasons behind this behavior. Sometimes, individuals may use masturbation as a coping mechanism for stress, anxiety, or boredom. If this resonates with you, consider exploring healthier coping strategies, such as physical exercise, meditation, or engaging in hobbies that you enjoy.

In summary, masturbation is a normal behavior, and when practiced in moderation, it is generally safe and healthy. However, if you are experiencing negative physical symptoms or if your habits are causing you distress, it may be beneficial to speak with a healthcare professional. They can provide personalized advice and support to help you understand your body better and address any concerns you may have. Remember, open communication with a trusted healthcare provider can help you navigate these issues and promote your overall well-being.
