Traditional Chinese Medicine Approaches for Myocarditis and Bradycardia - Traditional Chinese Medicine

What are the traditional Chinese medicine treatments for myocarditis with bradycardia?

I was hospitalized for myocarditis in mid-April and am currently resting at home.
However, I am now experiencing bradycardia with a heart rate of 40-50 beats per minute due to post-inflammatory conduction block.
Although it does not cause dizziness, aside from the option of a pacemaker to increase my heart rate, I would like to know if there are any treatment methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Thank you, Alex.

Dr. Hou Yuchang reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Hello Alex: Traditional Chinese Medicine cannot guarantee an increase in heart rate.
Generally, we need to see the individual in order to determine how we can assist you.
Typically, conditions can be categorized as heart yin deficiency, heart qi deficiency, and heart yang deficiency, but they may also present in a combined form.
After treatment, it may increase the strength or output of heart contractions, but it does not necessarily guarantee an increase in heart rate.

Dear Alex,
Thank you for reaching out with your question regarding Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approaches for myocarditis and bradycardia. It’s understandable that you are seeking alternative treatment options, especially after experiencing the challenges of myocarditis and its aftermath, such as heart conduction block and bradycardia.

In TCM, the heart is not only viewed as a physical organ but also as a vital component of the body’s emotional and spiritual health. The heart is associated with the "Shen" (spirit), and its health is believed to be interconnected with the overall balance of Qi (energy), blood, and the functioning of other organs. Therefore, TCM treatment for conditions like myocarditis and bradycardia often focuses on restoring balance and improving the flow of Qi and blood.

TCM Diagnosis and Treatment Principles
1. Diagnosis: TCM practitioners will typically assess your condition through pulse diagnosis, tongue examination, and a detailed inquiry into your symptoms and medical history. In your case, the symptoms of bradycardia and the history of myocarditis may indicate a deficiency of Qi and blood, or possibly a blockage of Qi and blood flow.

2. Treatment Goals: The primary goals of TCM treatment for myocarditis and bradycardia would be to:
- Nourish the heart and improve blood circulation.

- Tonify Qi and blood to support heart function.

- Clear any potential heat or inflammation that may be lingering from the myocarditis.

- Harmonize the body’s overall energy to promote recovery.

Common TCM Approaches
1. Herbal Medicine: TCM herbal formulas may include ingredients that are known to nourish the heart, invigorate blood circulation, and tonify Qi. Some commonly used herbs include:
- Dan Shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza): Known for its ability to invigorate blood and alleviate pain.

- Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis): Often used to nourish blood and regulate menstruation, it can also support heart health.

- Ren Shen (Ginseng): A powerful Qi tonic that can help improve energy levels and overall vitality.

- Huang Qi (Astragalus): Known for its immune-boosting properties and ability to tonify Qi.

2. Acupuncture: Acupuncture can be beneficial in regulating heart function and improving circulation. Specific acupuncture points may be targeted to enhance heart Qi, promote blood flow, and alleviate symptoms of bradycardia. Points such as Heart 7 (Shen Men) and Pericardium 6 (Neiguan) are commonly used to support heart health.

3. Dietary Therapy: TCM emphasizes the importance of diet in maintaining health. Foods that nourish the heart and improve blood circulation, such as dark leafy greens, red beans, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (like fish), may be recommended. Avoiding overly processed foods and excessive salt can also be beneficial.

4. Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporating gentle exercises such as Tai Chi or Qi Gong can help improve circulation and promote relaxation. Stress management techniques, including meditation and mindfulness, can also support heart health.

Considerations
While TCM can offer supportive care, it is essential to maintain open communication with your Western healthcare providers, especially since you are considering the use of a pacemaker. Combining TCM with conventional treatments can be beneficial, but it is crucial to ensure that both approaches are aligned and that there are no contraindications.

In conclusion, TCM offers various approaches that may help manage your symptoms of myocarditis and bradycardia. However, it is essential to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner who can tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs and monitor your progress. Always keep your healthcare team informed about any complementary therapies you choose to pursue.

Wishing you a smooth recovery and improved heart health.
