Why do males experience blood clots in urine?
I have kidney stones and underwent a lithotripsy procedure in early June, during which a stent was placed inside.
At the end of June, I experienced hematuria, and from June 20 to June 30, I had blood clots in my urine.
I'm unsure if this is related to the procedure or if there is another issue.

Dr. Chen Xiuyi reply Urology
Hello: After undergoing ureteroscopy for urinary stones, a ureteral stent is placed.
Some patients may experience hematuria after heavy work or exercise.
Generally, this improves only after the stent is removed.
It is best to return to the original surgical hospital for medical care and to arrange for stent removal.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Blood in urine, or hematuria, can be a concerning symptom that may indicate various underlying medical conditions. In your case, given your history of kidney stones and recent surgery, it is essential to consider several potential causes for the blood clots in your urine.
Possible Causes of Blood Clots in Urine
1. Kidney Stones: After undergoing a procedure to remove kidney stones, it is not uncommon to experience some bleeding as the urinary tract heals. The presence of blood clots could be a result of irritation or injury to the urinary tract during the procedure. Stones can cause abrasions in the lining of the urinary tract, leading to bleeding.
2. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): UTIs can cause inflammation and irritation of the urinary tract, which may lead to hematuria. Symptoms of a UTI often include a burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, and sometimes fever. If you have any accompanying symptoms, it would be wise to get tested for a UTI.
3. Bladder or Kidney Injury: If there was any trauma to the bladder or kidneys during the stone removal procedure, this could also result in bleeding. It is crucial to monitor for any additional symptoms, such as pain or changes in urination patterns.
4. Post-Surgical Complications: After any surgical procedure, complications such as bleeding or infection can occur. If the bleeding persists or worsens, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider to rule out any complications related to the surgery.
5. Prostate Issues: In men, conditions affecting the prostate, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostatitis, can also lead to blood in the urine. If you are experiencing any urinary difficulties, such as difficulty starting urination or a weak urine stream, this could be a contributing factor.
6. Tumors: Although less common, tumors in the bladder or kidneys can cause hematuria. This is particularly a concern if you have risk factors such as smoking or a family history of urinary tract cancers.
Recommended Actions
Given your situation, here are some steps you should consider:
- Consult Your Urologist: It is crucial to follow up with your urologist or healthcare provider, especially since you have a history of kidney stones and recent surgery. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to evaluate the urinary tract for any abnormalities.
- Urinalysis: A urinalysis can help determine the presence of infection, blood, or other abnormalities in your urine. This test can provide valuable information about the underlying cause of your symptoms.
- Hydration: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids, as this can help flush out any remaining stone fragments and reduce irritation in the urinary tract.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms you may experience, such as pain, fever, or changes in urination. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.
- Avoid Strenuous Activity: Until you have a clearer understanding of the cause of your symptoms, it may be wise to avoid strenuous physical activity that could exacerbate any underlying issues.
Conclusion
Blood clots in urine can arise from various causes, especially in the context of recent kidney stone surgery. While some bleeding may be expected post-surgery, persistent or worsening symptoms warrant further evaluation. It is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns to ensure appropriate management and treatment.
