Swelling and pain on the right side of the pubic hair area?

Hello, over the past two to three days, I have noticed redness and swelling in the lower right area of my pubic hair, close to the inner thigh, about the size of a thumb.
There is also a stinging sensation.
After showering yesterday, I experienced some broken skin with pus and a little blood, similar to when a pimple is popped.
Today, the redness and swelling have increased, and it hurts to touch it lightly.
I would like to know if this is what is commonly referred to as folliculitis? How should I treat it? Thank you.

Cynthia, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2001/06/17

The symptoms you are experiencing, including redness, swelling, pain, and the presence of pus and blood near your pubic hair, could indeed be indicative of folliculitis, which is an inflammation of the hair follicles. Folliculitis can occur due to various reasons, including bacterial infections, fungal infections, or irritation from shaving or other forms of hair removal.
1. Causes of Folliculitis:
- Bacterial Infection: The most common cause is a bacterial infection, often by Staphylococcus aureus. This can occur when bacteria enter the hair follicle through a cut or abrasion.

- Fungal Infection: Fungal infections can also lead to folliculitis, particularly in warm, moist areas of the body.

- Irritation: Shaving or waxing can irritate the skin and lead to inflammation of the hair follicles.

- Occlusion: Wearing tight clothing or using heavy ointments can block hair follicles and contribute to inflammation.

2. Symptoms:
- Redness and swelling around the hair follicles.

- Pain or tenderness in the affected area.

- Pus-filled blisters or bumps that may rupture and ooze.

- Itching or discomfort.

3. Self-Care and Treatment:
- Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Gently wash the affected area with mild soap and water.

- Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress can help soothe the area and promote drainage if there are any pus-filled bumps.

- Avoid Irritation: Refrain from shaving or wearing tight clothing until the area heals.

- Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter topical antibiotics (like Neosporin) may help if the area is infected. If the condition worsens or does not improve, a healthcare provider may prescribe topical or oral antibiotics.

- Avoid Picking: Do not pick at the lesions, as this can worsen the infection and lead to scarring.

4. When to See a Doctor:
- If the redness and swelling continue to spread or worsen.

- If you develop a fever or systemic symptoms, which may indicate a more serious infection.

- If the area does not improve with home treatment within a few days.

- If you notice recurrent episodes of folliculitis, as this may require further evaluation to determine underlying causes.

5. Prevention:
- Maintain good hygiene, especially in areas prone to moisture and friction.

- Use clean, sharp razors if shaving, and consider using shaving cream to reduce irritation.

- Wear loose-fitting clothing to minimize friction and irritation.

In summary, while your symptoms may suggest folliculitis, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If you notice any worsening symptoms or if the condition does not improve with basic self-care measures, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. They can provide tailored advice and may perform tests if necessary to rule out other conditions.
