What diseases are not suitable for consuming chicken essence?

After surgery, it is common for friends and family to bring chicken essence or bird's nest for hospital visits, but sometimes it is mentioned later that these cannot be consumed.
Does this mean that anything related to chicken or tonic foods should be avoided? I would like to inquire whether chicken essence is permissible after the following surgeries, and if there are other dietary recommendations or precautions for recovery:
1.
Breast cancer resection
2.
Ovarian cyst
3.
Kidney stones
4.
Bladder prolapse
5.
Heart stent
Since there are elderly individuals at home, some of whom have diabetes and hypertension, could you also suggest other related conditions that may not be suitable for chicken essence supplementation? Thank you.

Dr. Huang Shuli reply Nutrition

Eileen: Hello! It is not inappropriate to give commercial chicken essence or bird's nest as gifts for hospital visits after general surgery.
For elderly patients who may have poor appetite or difficulty chewing, these can provide some nutritional supplementation.
However, for individuals with diabetes, one must consider that the sugar in rock sugar bird's nest can affect blood glucose levels.
Those with gout should avoid high-purine foods such as chicken soup and meat broth, making chicken essence unsuitable as well.
For the five types of surgeries you mentioned, it is essential to first check if the patients have any chronic diseases that require dietary control.
Postoperative nutrition should be based on a balanced diet, as consuming a normal diet is the standard.
The nutrients contained in chicken essence or bird's nest are not particularly high (please refer to their packaging labels), and their prices are not low, so the benefits of supplementation are limited! This is the response from Dietitian Huang Shuli at Hsinchu Hospital.

After surgery, dietary choices can significantly impact recovery, and it's essential to consider individual health conditions when determining what foods or supplements are appropriate. Chicken essence, a concentrated form of chicken broth, is often viewed as a nutritious option for post-operative recovery due to its protein content and potential to enhance appetite. However, certain medical conditions may warrant caution or avoidance of chicken essence.

1. Diabetes: For individuals with diabetes, consuming chicken essence can be problematic, especially if it contains added sugars or is consumed in large quantities. The carbohydrates in chicken essence can affect blood glucose levels, making it crucial for diabetic patients to monitor their intake carefully. It's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian to ensure that any post-surgery diet aligns with their diabetes management plan.

2. Gout: Chicken essence, like other poultry products, contains purines, which can be metabolized into uric acid. For patients with gout or a history of gout attacks, consuming high-purine foods can exacerbate their condition. Therefore, it is generally recommended that individuals with gout avoid chicken essence to prevent potential flare-ups.

3. Kidney Stones: Patients with a history of kidney stones, particularly those formed from uric acid or calcium, should be cautious with chicken essence. The purines in chicken can contribute to uric acid levels, potentially leading to the formation of uric acid stones. Additionally, high sodium content in some commercial chicken essences can lead to increased calcium excretion in urine, which may contribute to calcium-based stones. Consulting a nephrologist or dietitian is advisable for tailored dietary recommendations.

4. Heart Conditions: For patients with heart conditions, particularly those who have undergone procedures such as heart stenting, sodium intake is a critical consideration. Many commercial chicken essences can be high in sodium, which may lead to fluid retention and increased blood pressure. Patients with hypertension or heart disease should opt for low-sodium versions or avoid chicken essence altogether.

5. Cancer Recovery: In the case of patients recovering from surgeries such as breast cancer or ovarian cyst removal, nutrition plays a vital role in recovery. While chicken essence can provide protein, it is essential to focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Some patients may have specific dietary restrictions based on their treatment plans or side effects from medications, so it's crucial to consult with an oncologist or a dietitian specializing in cancer care.

6. General Considerations: Beyond specific conditions, older adults may have varying tolerances to rich or concentrated foods like chicken essence. If they have digestive issues or are recovering from surgery, it may be better to start with lighter, easily digestible foods.
In conclusion, while chicken essence can be beneficial for some post-operative patients, it is not universally suitable. Individuals with diabetes, gout, kidney stones, heart conditions, or those recovering from cancer surgeries should approach chicken essence with caution. A balanced diet tailored to individual health needs, along with professional guidance from healthcare providers, is the best approach to ensure a safe and effective recovery. Always consult with a healthcare professional before making significant dietary changes post-surgery, especially when underlying health conditions are present.
