Hello: Please return for a follow-up appointment.
If all tests are normal, it is likely just uterine contractions and reasonable lochia following a miscarriage.

More Info
After an abortion, it is common for women to experience bleeding, which can vary in duration and intensity. Generally, the bleeding after an abortion can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on various factors such as the type of abortion (medical or surgical), the gestational age at the time of the procedure, and individual health conditions.
In your case, having experienced bleeding for five days post-abortion, with the first two days being light and the subsequent three days showing an increase in flow and a bright red color, is not unusual. It is important to note that the bleeding can fluctuate, and it is not uncommon for it to start off light and then become heavier as the body expels the remaining tissue from the uterus. This process can sometimes mimic a menstrual cycle, where bleeding may start light and then become heavier before tapering off.
The presence of abdominal pain, similar to menstrual cramps, is also a common symptom after an abortion. This discomfort is typically due to the uterus contracting as it returns to its pre-pregnancy size and expels any remaining tissue. However, if the pain is severe or accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, chills, or foul-smelling discharge, it could indicate a complication such as an infection or retained products of conception, and you should seek medical attention promptly.
In terms of how long the bleeding will last, it can vary widely among individuals. Some women may experience bleeding for just a few days, while others may have spotting for several weeks. On average, most women find that their bleeding subsides within two weeks, but it can take longer in some cases. If you find that the bleeding is excessively heavy (soaking through a pad in an hour or less), or if it continues for more than two weeks, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Regarding your concerns about the abdominal pain and gastrointestinal symptoms, it is not uncommon for women to experience gastrointestinal discomfort after an abortion due to hormonal changes and the physical stress of the procedure. However, if you are experiencing significant discomfort or if the symptoms worsen, it is important to discuss these with your doctor.
In summary, while some bleeding and cramping are normal after an abortion, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any concerning signs, such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. They can perform a physical examination and possibly an ultrasound to ensure that your recovery is progressing as expected and to rule out any complications. Remember, your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking medical advice when in doubt is always the best course of action.
