My testicles?

Hello, doctor! I'm 22 years old this year! However, my testicles seem to be very small, almost like a child's.
During my military physical examination, they didn't mention anything, but they are definitely much smaller than average.
What should I do? I want them to be the same size as normal people.
My testicles are really small; they don't hang down like those of most people and sometimes they even retract, almost as if they are not there.
However, I do ejaculate normally, but I do masturbate frequently.
Am I sick?

Zheng Nan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/07/22

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Zheng Nan: Hello, you can measure it yourself.
Generally, the length of the testicles in a healthy 22-year-old male is about 3-4 centimeters.
If there is a significant difference, you can visit a urologist for an ultrasound to measure the size.
If erectile and ejaculation functions are normal, you can also check a semen analysis and hormone levels to see if there are any issues.
If everything is normal, then there should be no concern.
Urology Department Chief, Hsu Wei-Kai, responding on behalf of the Taitung Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, cares about you.

When it comes to concerns about testicular size, it's important to understand that there is a wide range of normal when it comes to human anatomy. Testicular size can vary significantly among individuals, and several factors can influence this variation, including genetics, hormonal levels, and overall health.

Firstly, it's essential to recognize that having smaller testicles does not inherently indicate a medical problem. Many men have testicles that are smaller than average, and as long as they are functioning normally—meaning they produce sperm and hormones like testosterone—there may be no cause for concern. The fact that you are experiencing normal ejaculation and sexual function is a positive sign that your reproductive system is working as it should.

However, if you are feeling anxious about your testicular size, it might be helpful to consider a few key points:
1. Genetics: Just like height or shoe size, testicular size can be influenced by genetics. If your family members have smaller testicles, it may simply be a hereditary trait.

2. Hormonal Factors: Hormones play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of testicular size. Conditions that affect hormone levels, such as hypogonadism (where the body doesn't produce enough testosterone), can lead to smaller testicles. If you have concerns about your hormone levels, a healthcare provider can perform tests to assess this.

3. Health and Lifestyle: Overall health can impact testicular size. Factors such as obesity, smoking, and substance abuse can affect hormone levels and reproductive health. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding harmful substances can support your reproductive health.

4. Medical Conditions: In some cases, smaller testicles can be associated with medical conditions, such as Klinefelter syndrome or other genetic disorders. If you have any other symptoms, such as pain, swelling, or changes in sexual function, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.

5. Psychological Impact: It's not uncommon for men to feel self-conscious about their body, including testicular size. If this concern is affecting your mental health or self-esteem, speaking with a mental health professional can be beneficial. They can help you work through these feelings and provide support.

If you are still concerned about your testicular size, the best course of action is to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination, discuss your medical history, and possibly run tests to ensure everything is functioning normally. This can provide peace of mind and help you understand your body better.

In summary, while testicular size can vary widely, having smaller testicles does not automatically indicate a problem, especially if you are experiencing normal sexual function. However, if you have ongoing concerns, seeking medical advice is always a good step to ensure your health and well-being.
