Abnormal hair loss issues?
Hello Dr.
Huang,
On July 11, I had a perm done, and on the sixth day, while washing my hair, I experienced a significant amount of hair loss that clogged the entire drain.
I was shocked and immediately went to the salon two days later (after a typhoon caused a day off) on July 19 to inquire about it.
They told me that it wasn't an issue related to the perm, but rather hair that hadn't shed during the thinning process.
Although I felt somewhat concerned, I chose to believe their explanation because I didn't want my hair to continue falling out.
However, just now (on July 28), while washing my hair again, I noticed a large amount of hair loss.
A few days prior, I had washed it without experiencing this issue.
I am feeling quite anxious and afraid that if this continues, I might go bald.
I collected a clump of the fallen hair; can it be examined for any clues? Additionally, since getting the perm, my hair has noticeably become much finer and softer than before.
Does this indicate that the health of my hair has been compromised? Or could I possibly have an underlying condition that is causing this situation?
I am really worried, and I would appreciate it if you could help clarify my concerns as soon as possible.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
A distressed and anxious individual

Perm solutions will inevitably cause some degree of damage to the hair quality.
If the reaction is too strong, the hair shaft may break, but it will not harm the hair follicles, so over time, the hair will grow back.

Dear Concerned Individual,
I understand your anxiety regarding the significant hair loss you have experienced following your recent perm. Hair loss can be distressing, especially when it seems to occur suddenly and in large quantities. Let's delve into the potential causes and concerns surrounding your situation.
Firstly, it is essential to recognize that hair loss can occur for various reasons, and it is often multifactorial. In your case, the timing of the hair loss following a perm raises a few possibilities. Chemical treatments like perms can indeed weaken hair, making it more susceptible to breakage and shedding. The chemicals used in perming can alter the structure of the hair, leading to changes in texture and strength. If your hair feels noticeably finer and softer, it may indicate that the hair's integrity has been compromised.
The hair loss you are experiencing could be a result of several factors:
1. Telogen Effluvium: This is a common form of temporary hair loss that occurs after stress, shock, or a traumatic event. It can happen after a significant change in hair care routines, such as a perm. The hair follicles may enter a resting phase prematurely, leading to increased shedding.
2. Chemical Damage: As mentioned, the chemicals in hair treatments can weaken hair strands. If the perm was not applied correctly or if your hair was already in a fragile state, this could exacerbate the shedding.
3. Underlying Health Issues: While it is less likely that a sudden change in hair loss is due to an underlying health condition, it is still a possibility. Conditions such as thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalances, or nutritional deficiencies can contribute to hair loss. If you have other symptoms or concerns about your health, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.
4. Genetic Factors: If there is a family history of hair loss, it may also play a role in your situation. However, given the timing related to the perm, it seems more likely that the treatment is a significant contributing factor.
Regarding your question about examining the collected hair, while it can provide some insights, it is not a definitive diagnostic tool. A dermatologist or trichologist can analyze the hair and scalp more thoroughly, potentially identifying signs of damage or other issues.
To address your concerns about becoming bald, it is important to remember that not all hair loss leads to permanent baldness. Many people experience temporary shedding that resolves over time, especially if the underlying cause is addressed. Here are some steps you can take to help manage your hair health:
- Gentle Hair Care: Avoid harsh treatments and minimize heat styling. Use a mild shampoo and a nourishing conditioner to help restore moisture.
- Nutritional Support: Ensure you are consuming a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals that support hair health, such as biotin, zinc, and vitamins A and E.
- Stress Management: Since stress can exacerbate hair loss, consider incorporating stress-reducing activities into your routine, such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise.
- Consult a Professional: If your hair loss persists or worsens, seek the advice of a dermatologist or a trichologist. They can provide a thorough examination and recommend appropriate treatments or interventions.
In conclusion, while your recent perm may have contributed to the hair loss you are experiencing, it is essential to consider all potential factors. With proper care and attention, many individuals see improvement in their hair health over time. Please take care of yourself, and do not hesitate to seek professional help if your concerns continue.
Best wishes for your hair recovery and overall well-being.
