Birth control pills
I have been taking birth control pills (Kiryian) since my twenties, and it has been about ten years now.
Everything has been normal so far.
I previously asked my gynecologist, and she said it's fine to stop taking them for one month each year.
However, in the past two years, I have been stopping for two months each year.
Is it safe for me to continue taking them for such a long time? Could long-term use be harmful to my health? Thank you.

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Please monitor blood pressure, liver function, cholesterol, blood lipid levels, venous thrombus, etc.
If there are no abnormalities, you may continue using Liraglutide.

Long-term use of birth control pills, such as the one you mentioned (likely referring to a combination oral contraceptive), can be a safe and effective method of contraception for many women. However, it is essential to consider both the benefits and potential risks associated with prolonged use.
Safety and Health Concerns
1. Hormonal Regulation: Birth control pills work primarily by regulating hormones to prevent ovulation. For many women, this can lead to more regular menstrual cycles, reduced menstrual cramps, and decreased risk of certain conditions like endometriosis and ovarian cysts.
2. Long-term Effects: Studies have shown that long-term use of birth control pills can have both positive and negative effects. On the positive side, they can reduce the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers. However, there are potential risks, including an increased risk of blood clots, especially in women who smoke, are over 35, or have other risk factors such as obesity or a history of clotting disorders.
3. Breaks in Usage: Your practice of taking a break from the pill for one or two months each year is generally considered safe and can help mitigate some risks associated with long-term use. This practice allows your body to have a break from the hormones, which can be beneficial for some women. However, it is essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider to ensure it aligns with your health needs and lifestyle.
4. Monitoring Health: Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider are crucial while on birth control pills, especially for long-term users. These visits can help monitor any potential side effects, such as changes in blood pressure, weight, or any signs of complications like thrombosis.
5. Individual Considerations: Each woman's health profile is unique. Factors such as age, family history, lifestyle, and any pre-existing conditions can influence the safety of long-term birth control pill use. For instance, women with a history of migraines, particularly with aura, may need to consider alternative contraceptive methods due to an increased risk of stroke associated with estrogen-containing pills.
6. Alternatives: If you are concerned about the long-term use of birth control pills, there are alternative contraceptive methods available, such as IUDs (intrauterine devices), implants, or non-hormonal methods. These alternatives may provide effective contraception without some of the risks associated with long-term hormonal use.
Conclusion
In summary, while long-term use of birth control pills can be safe for many women, it is essential to have ongoing discussions with your healthcare provider about your individual health circumstances. Regular monitoring and being aware of any changes in your health can help manage risks effectively. If you have any concerns about the duration of use or potential side effects, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
