Is it a symptom of a stroke?
I took a nap today (lying on the table) and when I woke up, I felt a tingling sensation in my palms that has continued until the afternoon and is still present now.
My father had a mild stroke six months ago, and his symptoms were similar to this.
Should I be concerned? Do I need further examination?

Dr. Ye Boshou reply Neurology
Celine's numbness in her hand while resting on the table is most likely due to poor peripheral circulation and is not significantly related to a stroke.
There is no need for further examination at this time.

Numbness in the hands can indeed be concerning, especially given your family history of stroke. It's important to understand that while hand numbness can be a symptom of a stroke, it is not the only possible cause. Let's explore this further.
Firstly, a stroke occurs when there is a disruption of blood flow to the brain, which can lead to brain cell death. The symptoms of a stroke can vary widely depending on the area of the brain affected. Common symptoms include sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; confusion; trouble speaking or understanding speech; difficulty seeing in one or both eyes; and difficulty walking, dizziness, or loss of balance and coordination.
In your case, the numbness in your hand could be related to several factors. If the numbness is persistent and accompanied by other symptoms such as weakness, difficulty speaking, or facial drooping, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention, as these could be signs of a stroke.
However, if the numbness is isolated to your hand and does not present with other neurological symptoms, it may be due to other causes. Common non-stroke related causes of hand numbness include:
1. Nerve Compression: Conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, where the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, can lead to numbness in the hand. This is often exacerbated by repetitive movements or awkward positions, such as sleeping with your arm in an unusual position.
2. Peripheral Neuropathy: This condition, often related to diabetes, can cause numbness, tingling, and pain in the hands and feet due to nerve damage.
3. Cervical Radiculopathy: Nerve roots in the neck can become compressed due to herniated discs or degenerative changes, leading to numbness in the arms and hands.
4. Circulatory Issues: Poor circulation or vascular issues can also lead to numbness in the extremities.
5. Anxiety and Stress: Sometimes, anxiety can manifest physically, leading to sensations of numbness or tingling in the hands.
Given your concern and family history, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend a thorough neurological examination, and possibly imaging studies like an MRI or CT scan, to rule out any serious conditions, including stroke. Additionally, nerve conduction studies or electromyography (EMG) might be suggested to evaluate for nerve compression or damage.
In summary, while hand numbness can be a symptom of a stroke, it is essential to consider the broader context of your symptoms and medical history. If you experience any additional symptoms associated with stroke, seek emergency medical care immediately. Otherwise, a visit to your doctor for a comprehensive evaluation is advisable to determine the underlying cause of your numbness and to discuss any necessary tests or treatments. Remember, early intervention can make a significant difference in outcomes for many conditions.
