Penile curvature

I have seen many articles discussing penile curvature, with descriptions of curves to the left, right, or upward, but I haven't come across any that mention downward curvature.
When I have an erection, it curves downward like a rainbow, with the glans facing the floor.
Is this considered normal? Please provide an answer, doctor.
Thank you.

Ba Dou, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/08/18

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello: Penile curvature is a common phenomenon and generally does not require treatment unless it affects sexual intercourse.
Your condition falls within the normal range.
If you are really concerned, you can take a picture with a digital camera and bring it to the clinic for diagnosis.
Sincerely, Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of Urology, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

The curvature of the penis during an erection can vary significantly among individuals, and it is not uncommon for some men to experience a downward curvature. In general, a slight curvature—whether it is upward, downward, or to the side—is considered normal as long as it does not cause pain or interfere with sexual function.
The penis is composed of erectile tissue, which can expand and contract during arousal and erection. This tissue does not always expand evenly, leading to variations in shape and curvature. A downward curve, like the one you described, can occur due to several factors, including anatomical differences, the presence of fibrous tissue, or even the way the ligaments attach to the penis.

However, if the curvature is pronounced or has developed suddenly, it may be indicative of a condition known as Peyronie's disease. This condition is characterized by the formation of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, which can lead to a significant bend or curve during erection, often accompanied by pain. Peyronie's disease can also affect sexual function and may require medical evaluation and treatment.

In your case, if the downward curvature has been present for a long time and does not cause any discomfort or issues with sexual activity, it is likely within the range of normal anatomical variation. However, if you experience any pain, difficulty during intercourse, or if the curvature has changed over time, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a urologist. They can perform a thorough examination and determine if any underlying issues need to be addressed.

In summary, a downward curvature of the penis during erection can be normal, but it is essential to monitor any changes in curvature or associated symptoms. If you have concerns about your condition, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step. Remember that sexual health is an important aspect of overall well-being, and addressing any concerns with a qualified healthcare provider can help ensure that you maintain a healthy sexual life.
