Eyebrow Issues
Hello Dr.
Jiang: My eyebrows used to be quite thick, but due to repeatedly removing my safety helmet, which tugged at my eyebrows, and also scratching them because of itching, some areas have become sparse.
I haven't scratched my eyebrows for a long time, but they still haven't grown back.
Could you please advise me on methods to restore my eyebrows to their previous thickness? Thank you, Tom.
Tom, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/08/23
Dr. Jiang Zheen reply Dermatology
First, it is important to consult a dermatologist to examine whether there are any abnormalities in the skin and hair follicle cells in the eyebrow area.
If there are no abnormalities, the hair should grow back.
Wishing you peace, Jesus loves you.

Restoring thinning eyebrows can be a concern for many individuals, and there are several strategies that can help promote hair regrowth and improve the overall appearance of your eyebrows. Here are some tips and methods that dermatologists often recommend:
1. Avoid Over-Plucking: It sounds like you've already stopped plucking your eyebrows, which is a great first step. Over-plucking can lead to permanent damage to hair follicles, making it difficult for hair to regrow. Allowing your eyebrows to grow out naturally is essential for recovery.
2. Nourish Your Brows: Just like the hair on your head, your eyebrows can benefit from nourishment. Consider using natural oils such as castor oil, coconut oil, or olive oil. These oils are rich in nutrients and can help moisturize the hair follicles, potentially promoting hair growth. Apply a small amount to your eyebrows daily, preferably before bedtime, and leave it on overnight.
3. Diet and Nutrition: A well-balanced diet plays a crucial role in hair health. Ensure you are consuming enough vitamins and minerals that support hair growth, such as biotin, vitamin E, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids. Foods like nuts, seeds, fish, eggs, and leafy greens can be beneficial. Staying hydrated is also important for overall health, including hair health.
4. Consider Supplements: If your diet lacks certain nutrients, you might consider taking supplements specifically designed for hair health. Biotin supplements are particularly popular for promoting hair growth. However, it's always best to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.
5. Eyebrow Serums: There are various eyebrow serums available on the market that claim to promote hair growth. Look for products that contain peptides, vitamins, and botanical extracts. These serums are designed to nourish the hair follicles and stimulate growth. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully for the best results.
6. Microblading or Tattooing: If you're looking for a more immediate solution, consider cosmetic procedures like microblading or eyebrow tattooing. These techniques can create the illusion of fuller eyebrows and are semi-permanent. However, it's essential to choose a qualified professional to ensure safety and satisfactory results.
7. Patience is Key: Hair growth takes time, and it can be frustrating to wait for results. Typically, eyebrow hair grows slowly, and it may take several weeks to months to see significant changes. Consistency in your care routine is crucial.
8. Consult a Dermatologist: If you notice that your eyebrows are not regrowing despite your efforts, or if you experience other symptoms such as itching, redness, or irritation, it may be wise to consult a dermatologist. They can assess your condition and rule out any underlying issues, such as hormonal imbalances or skin conditions that may be affecting hair growth.
9. Avoid Harsh Products: Be cautious with the products you use around your eyebrows. Avoid harsh chemicals, such as those found in some makeup removers or skincare products, as they can irritate the skin and hair follicles.
In summary, restoring thinning eyebrows involves a combination of patience, proper care, and potentially seeking professional advice. By nourishing your brows, maintaining a healthy diet, and considering cosmetic options if necessary, you can work towards achieving the fuller eyebrows you desire. Remember, individual results may vary, and it's essential to find a routine that works best for you.
