Melanin
Hello, I have a couple of questions: 1.
My underarms have been dark since high school, and even though I wash them thoroughly, I still don't dare to wear sleeveless tops.
2.
Recently, they have also been itchy, and I've been scratching them, which has left marks.
What should I do?

Hello, miss: 1.
Are you on the heavier side? Generally, dark skin under the armpits is mainly related to obesity.
You can visit a dermatologist to prescribe topical ointments that can help improve the condition.
Additionally, weight loss is also a good method.
2.
If you are not overweight, then you should see an endocrinologist to check for other endocrine issues.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Dark underarms can be a common concern for many individuals, and understanding the underlying causes and potential solutions is essential for addressing this issue effectively.
Causes of Dark Underarms
1. Hyperpigmentation: This is one of the most common reasons for dark underarms. Hyperpigmentation can occur due to various factors, including friction from clothing, shaving, or even the use of certain deodorants. Over time, these factors can lead to an increase in melanin production in the skin, resulting in darker patches.
2. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as acanthosis nigricans, which is characterized by dark, velvety patches of skin, can also affect the underarms. This condition is often associated with insulin resistance and can be a sign of underlying health issues, such as obesity or diabetes.
3. Irritation and Allergic Reactions: Frequent shaving or the use of harsh chemicals in deodorants can irritate the skin, leading to inflammation and subsequent darkening. If you are experiencing itchiness and scratching, this could exacerbate the problem, leading to further irritation and discoloration.
4. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, or due to certain medications, can also contribute to changes in skin pigmentation.
5. Poor Hygiene: While you mentioned that you wash your underarms thoroughly, it’s important to ensure that you are using gentle cleansers and not irritating the skin further. Sometimes, the use of strong soaps can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to irritation.
Solutions for Dark Underarms
1. Gentle Exfoliation: Regularly exfoliating the underarm area can help remove dead skin cells and promote a more even skin tone. However, be cautious not to over-exfoliate, as this can lead to irritation.
2. Moisturizing: Keeping the skin hydrated is crucial. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to help soothe the skin and reduce irritation.
3. Switching Deodorants: If you suspect that your deodorant may be causing irritation, consider switching to a natural or hypoallergenic option. Look for products that are free from alcohol and artificial fragrances.
4. Avoiding Shaving: If shaving is causing irritation, consider alternative hair removal methods, such as waxing or laser hair removal, which may be less irritating to the skin.
5. Consulting a Dermatologist: If the darkening persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a proper diagnosis and may recommend treatments such as topical creams containing ingredients like hydroquinone, retinoids, or chemical peels that can help lighten the skin.
6. Addressing Underlying Health Issues: If you suspect that your dark underarms may be related to a condition like acanthosis nigricans, it’s important to address any underlying health issues. This may involve lifestyle changes, such as weight management and dietary adjustments, as well as medical treatment for conditions like insulin resistance.
7. Avoiding Friction: Wearing loose-fitting clothing can help reduce friction in the underarm area, which may help prevent further darkening.
Conclusion
Dark underarms can be a source of self-consciousness, but understanding the causes and implementing appropriate solutions can significantly improve the situation. It’s important to be patient, as changes in skin pigmentation can take time to resolve. If you continue to experience discomfort or if the condition worsens, seeking professional medical advice is the best course of action. A dermatologist can provide tailored recommendations and treatments to help you achieve healthier, more even-toned skin.
