Does evening primrose oil shorten the menstrual period?

I took evening primrose oil capsules in July to alleviate menstrual pain, but my menstrual cycle changed from 28 days to 25 days, with periods on 5/31, 6/28, 7/25, and 8/19.
I had sexual intercourse (with ejaculation) on 8/23, the last day of my period.
Am I at risk of becoming pregnant? (Regarding the safe period) Will my menstrual cycle be consistently 25 days from now on? Thank you for your response!

Hello: 1.
Only the correct and consistent use of condoms can prevent sexually transmitted infections and provide effective contraception; the rhythm method is unreliable.
2.
I am not familiar with the product evening primrose oil.
3.
A menstrual cycle of 21 to 35 days is generally considered acceptable.
4.
If you have issues with menstrual pain, please consult a gynecologist.

Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) is a popular supplement often used by women to help alleviate symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menstrual discomfort. It contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. However, the relationship between EPO and menstrual cycle length is not straightforward and can vary from person to person.

Regarding your question about whether Evening Primrose Oil can shorten your menstrual cycle, there is limited scientific evidence to suggest that EPO directly affects the length of the menstrual cycle. Menstrual cycles can naturally vary due to a variety of factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, diet, exercise, and overall health. A change from a 28-day cycle to a 25-day cycle may not necessarily be attributed to the use of EPO. It could be a normal variation in your cycle length, especially if you have experienced this change only once or twice.

As for your concern about pregnancy, if you had unprotected intercourse on August 23, and your menstrual cycle is typically around 25 to 28 days, there is a possibility of pregnancy, especially if you were close to your ovulation period. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next period, so if your cycle is indeed shortening to 25 days, ovulation may have occurred around August 9. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it would be advisable to take a home pregnancy test if your next period is late or to consult with a healthcare provider for further guidance.

Regarding the consistency of your menstrual cycle, it is not uncommon for menstrual cycles to fluctuate. While some women may experience a more regular cycle after starting a supplement like EPO, others may continue to experience variations. If you notice that your cycle remains consistently shorter or if you have other symptoms such as significant changes in flow, pain, or irregularities, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional. They can help assess your situation and determine if any underlying issues need to be addressed.

In summary, while Evening Primrose Oil is generally considered safe for most women and may help with menstrual discomfort, its effect on menstrual cycle length can vary. If you are experiencing significant changes in your cycle or have concerns about pregnancy, it is best to seek advice from a healthcare provider who can provide personalized recommendations based on your health history and current situation.
