Itching the day after the procedure?

Doctor: Hello..
I had unprotected sexual intercourse with my boyfriend for the first time the day before yesterday.
The next day, I experienced persistent itching in the genital area.
I've changed my underwear several times and washed them many times, but the itching continues.
The discharge appears normal and has no odor.
There is no pain in the genital area.
I did experience some pain in the lower abdomen right after the intercourse, but it went away the next day.
Am I infected with something?

Post-sexual itching can be a concerning symptom, especially after unprotected sexual intercourse. It’s important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical attention.
Firstly, the itching you are experiencing could be due to several factors. One common cause is irritation or an allergic reaction to bodily fluids, lubricants, or even the fabric of your underwear. If you recently changed your detergent or used a new type of fabric softener, this could also lead to irritation.
Another possibility is a yeast infection, which can occur after sexual activity, especially if there is a change in the vaginal flora. Yeast infections are characterized by itching, but they often come with a thick, white discharge that resembles cottage cheese. However, you mentioned that your discharge is normal and without odor, which makes a yeast infection less likely.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is another condition that can cause itching and is often associated with sexual activity. BV occurs when there is an imbalance in the normal bacteria found in the vagina. It typically presents with a fishy odor and may or may not have associated itching.
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) should also be considered, especially since you mentioned that you had unprotected sex. Some STIs, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, can cause itching, but they often come with other symptoms like unusual discharge, burning during urination, or pelvic pain. It’s worth noting that some STIs can be asymptomatic, so even if you don’t have other symptoms, it’s still a good idea to get tested.

Given that you experienced pain in the lower abdomen after intercourse, it’s essential to monitor this symptom. While it may have resolved, persistent or recurrent pain could indicate an underlying issue, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can occur if an STI goes untreated.

Here are some steps you can take:
1. Maintain Hygiene: Continue to keep the genital area clean and dry. Avoid using scented soaps or products that could cause further irritation.

2. Wear Breathable Fabrics: Opt for cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing to reduce moisture and irritation.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on any changes in your symptoms. If the itching persists or worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as unusual discharge, odor, or pain, it’s crucial to seek medical attention.

4. Get Tested: Since you had unprotected sex, it’s advisable to get tested for STIs, even if you do not have other symptoms. Many STIs can be asymptomatic, and early detection is key to effective treatment.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the itching continues or if you have any concerns about your symptoms, consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and may take samples for testing to determine the cause of your symptoms.

In conclusion, while post-sexual itching can be caused by various factors, it’s essential to pay attention to your body and seek medical advice if symptoms persist. Taking proactive steps to maintain sexual health and hygiene can help prevent future issues. Remember, open communication with your partner about sexual health is also vital in maintaining a healthy sexual relationship.
