Swelling of the urethral opening?
Hello, I have been pregnant for about a month, but the urethral opening is continuously swollen, making it difficult to sit or stand normally.
When standing, I can clearly feel the protruding swelling at the urethral opening, and sitting causes pain due to pressure.
Would doing inversions help improve this? Thank you.

Dr. Li Guanghan reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello: Please come for an examination first.
If there are no specific abnormalities and it is simply swelling, it is likely caused by edema and congestion.
Inversion is too strenuous; lying flat with your hips slightly elevated will help promote venous return.

Managing urethral swelling during early pregnancy can be a concerning issue, especially when it causes discomfort or pain. First and foremost, it's essential to understand that pregnancy brings about significant hormonal changes in the body, which can lead to various symptoms, including swelling in different areas.
Urethral swelling may be attributed to several factors during pregnancy, including increased blood flow, hormonal changes, or even urinary tract infections (UTIs). The pressure from the growing uterus can also contribute to discomfort in the pelvic area. Given your symptoms of persistent swelling and pain, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider to rule out any underlying conditions, such as a UTI or other infections, which may require treatment.
As for your question about whether doing a headstand (倒立) could help alleviate the swelling, it's important to approach this with caution. While some people believe that inversion poses can help with circulation and reduce swelling, they may not be suitable for everyone, especially during pregnancy. Inversion poses can increase pressure in the abdomen and may not be comfortable or safe for pregnant individuals. Instead, consider the following tips to manage urethral swelling:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help flush out toxins and reduce the risk of urinary tract infections, which can contribute to swelling.
2. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to the affected area may help alleviate discomfort and reduce swelling.
3. Avoid Tight Clothing: Wearing loose-fitting clothing can help reduce pressure on the urethra and surrounding areas.
4. Pelvic Floor Exercises: Engaging in gentle pelvic floor exercises, such as Kegel exercises, can help strengthen the pelvic muscles and may alleviate some discomfort.
5. Rest: Ensure you are getting enough rest and avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting, which can exacerbate swelling.
6. Consult Your Doctor: If the swelling persists or worsens, it is essential to seek medical advice. Your healthcare provider may recommend further evaluation or treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
7. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms, such as pain during urination, fever, or unusual discharge, and report these to your healthcare provider.
In summary, while it may be tempting to try inversion poses to relieve swelling, it is best to prioritize safety and comfort during pregnancy. Focus on hydration, gentle exercises, and consulting with your healthcare provider for personalized advice. Remember that your health and the health of your baby are paramount, so any persistent or concerning symptoms should be addressed promptly.
