Upper abdominal discomfort..?
In the past couple of days, I have been experiencing persistent discomfort in my upper abdomen, from left to right, feeling bloated and heavy.
When I press on it, it feels sore and tender.
Additionally, I have been having diarrhea for the past two days.
Although I feel generally fine, I can't shake off the strange sensation in my upper abdomen.
I would like to ask the doctor what this might indicate.
Thank you.

Dr. Yuan Hongdao reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello, based on your description, it seems you may have gastroenteritis.
I recommend that you avoid drinking milk for the time being and stick to a light diet.
If you experience severe abdominal pain, fever, or persistent diarrhea, you should consult a gastroenterologist.
Sincerely, Dr.

Upper abdominal discomfort, especially when accompanied by digestive issues such as diarrhea, can be indicative of several underlying conditions. Given your symptoms of persistent pressure and discomfort across the upper abdomen, along with the recent onset of diarrhea, it is essential to consider a range of possible causes.
Firstly, the sensation of pressure or fullness in the upper abdomen can be attributed to various gastrointestinal conditions. One common cause is gastritis, which is inflammation of the stomach lining. This condition can lead to discomfort, bloating, and sometimes diarrhea, especially if the stomach is irritated by certain foods, alcohol, or medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Another possibility is peptic ulcer disease, where sores develop on the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). Symptoms may include a burning sensation in the upper abdomen, which can sometimes be relieved by eating, and may also be accompanied by nausea or changes in bowel habits.
Additionally, functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), could also explain your symptoms. IBS is characterized by abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation. Stress and dietary factors often exacerbate these symptoms.
Infections, particularly viral gastroenteritis, could also be a culprit. This condition, often referred to as the stomach flu, can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and discomfort. If you have been exposed to contaminated food or water, or if there are other individuals around you experiencing similar symptoms, this could be a likely cause.
Moreover, if you have a history of gallbladder issues, such as gallstones, this could also lead to upper abdominal discomfort, especially after meals. Gallstones can block the bile duct, leading to pain and digestive disturbances.
Given that your symptoms have persisted for a couple of days, it is advisable to monitor your condition closely. If the discomfort worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as fever, severe abdominal pain, or blood in your stool, it would be prudent to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider may recommend diagnostic tests such as blood tests, abdominal ultrasound, or endoscopy to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, consider dietary modifications. Eating smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding spicy, fatty, or highly processed foods may help alleviate some discomfort. Staying hydrated is also crucial, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea, as it can lead to dehydration.
In summary, while there are several potential causes for your upper abdominal discomfort and diarrhea, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Your symptoms warrant further investigation to rule out any serious conditions and to ensure you receive the necessary care.
