Blood in Semen After Masturbation: When to Seek Help - Urology

Regarding ejaculation with blood after masturbation?

I have a habit of masturbating, which started about six months ago, approximately once a day.
However, since last week, I have noticed that my semen has changed from yellow to deep red and now has turned blackish-red, almost entirely blood.
Should I seek medical attention immediately, or can I take some time off from masturbation to see if it helps my condition? Aside from this issue, everything else seems normal; my urine is normal, and my daily life is unaffected.
After masturbating, I experience slight abdominal pain.
I would appreciate your guidance.
Thank you very much.

Dear: Regarding masturbation, it can sometimes cause microvascular rupture, leading to hematospermia, similar to normal sexual activity.
Once it occurs, it is advisable to reduce the chances of re-bleeding, which means it is recommended to refrain from ejaculation for about two weeks, as it generally resolves on its own.
If bleeding persists beyond two weeks, it is best to undergo a thorough examination to rule out issues such as tumors.

Experiencing blood in semen, known medically as hematospermia, can be concerning, especially when it changes from a normal appearance to a yellowish or reddish hue, and eventually to a dark red or black color. Given your description of the symptoms, it is crucial to approach this situation with caution and seek medical attention promptly.

Firstly, it is important to understand that hematospermia can arise from various causes, ranging from benign to more serious conditions. Common causes include inflammation or infection of the prostate (prostatitis), seminal vesicles, or urethra, as well as trauma to the genital area. Other potential causes could include benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or even more serious conditions such as tumors or vascular malformations. The fact that you have been experiencing this change in your semen for about a week, and it has progressively worsened, is a significant indicator that you should not delay seeking medical evaluation.

While you mentioned the possibility of resting and abstaining from masturbation, it is essential to recognize that simply stopping this activity may not resolve the underlying issue. In fact, if there is an infection or another medical condition present, it may require specific treatment, such as antibiotics or other medications. Additionally, the abdominal pain you experience post-masturbation could indicate that there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

When you visit a healthcare provider, they will likely perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and possibly some diagnostic tests such as a urinalysis, semen analysis, or imaging studies (like an ultrasound) to determine the cause of the bleeding. It is also important to communicate any other symptoms you may have experienced, even if they seem unrelated, as they can provide valuable context for your healthcare provider.

In summary, while it may be tempting to wait and see if the symptoms resolve on their own, the presence of blood in your semen, particularly with the changes you have described, warrants immediate medical attention. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health. Seeking help from a healthcare professional will ensure that you receive the appropriate diagnosis and treatment, which can help prevent potential complications and promote your overall well-being.
